Buford is a town in Muskogee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga-Merrillville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Buford has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa), typical of most southern Georgia towns and villages. The first permanent settler in what would become Buford was Johnnie Hill in 1853. A post office called Beechmont was established in 1857, but it did not remain open long due to difficulties getting mail to the town. In 1860, Baptist preacher Otho Holland opened a school in what became Buford which remained operational until 1898. By 1865, all land east of the Little Tennessee River had been claimed by the United States and developed as Gadsden County for military purposes around Fort Pickens on Mobile Bayou. As Confederate troops retreated from Atlanta during the American Civil War, they took up residence along Mobile Bayou and began settling what would become Muskogee County. In 1868, Andrew Johnson became President of the United States and selected Gadsden County as his new home for government officials and military personnel who were stationed on or near Mobile Bayou. The county seat shifted from Dyersburg to Gadsden several times during its early years because different locations were deemed more important for defense reasons: first to be within easy reach of MobileBayou; then because Dyersburg lacked resident doctors who could treat sick soldiers; finally because Dyersburg was too large and complex an entity to manage effectively as a county seat with multiple jurisdictions). Buford, Georgia is a town in Cochran County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,823 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from General James Buford's home of Buford Barracks. The first white settler in what is now Buford was John Allerton in 1819. A post office was established in 1821 and named for General James Buford. By 1830, there were over 60 settlers living in what is now Buford. In 1837, the government erected a road to connect Athens with Savannah by way of Milledgeville and then on to Natchez via Decatur Township. This road became known as the "Buford Road." The first school opened in this town on July 4th, 1838. In 1840-1841 three large plantations were set aside in Cochran County for slave labor under contracts with the State of Georgia: Pickens Plantation (later DeKalb), Swanns Creek Plantation (later Parker), and Forrest Plantation (later Dawson). These plantations covered an area that extended from modern day Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta to present day Acworth and much of northeastern Fulton County including parts of Lithonia and Dunwoody counties. The town site was surveyed by Captain John Sledge on October 15th, 1840; he had been sent by Governor Andrew Jackson to survey roads connecting northern Georgia with central Alabama and Mississippi Territory during his term as governor from February 17th until March 3rd, 1840. On January 9th 1841 Jno Pemberton signed an order authorizing him to begin building a courthouse and jail within one year following his arrival in town from Hawkins County where he had served as justice of peace since November 8th 1840 while also providing law enforcement services for that county He started construction on both buildings almost immediately upon arriving which included the erection of two posts near today's courthouse square On January 29th1841 Jno Pemberton ordered all slaves brought into the new courthouse prior to its opening which caused some protest due to fears they would be sold or kidnapped without their owners knowledge but soon afterwards most slaves were brought into custody within days or weeks following orders given by Jno Pemberton . Jail construction began shortly thereafter with only four cells being built before being put into use on May 6th when Judge Wm Stephenson arrived from Jacksonville . The first court case heard inside the new jail occurred on December 12nd when Ebenezer White appeals a sentence handed down by Sheriff George Milford after White robbing several men north of Marietta . "In those early days," said historian Donnell Gillett "the courthouse served not just as a place where people could go to court but also as headquarters forlaw enforcement." After years spent serving primarily local residents rather than Georgians statewide who used state courts elsewhere outside their own townsfolk banded together to challenge Milford's jurisdiction , legislators decided it would be more practical and efficient for them instead establish statewide proceedings through circuit courts composed mostly exclusivelyof Georgians even though manyrender supportto open sessions featuring citizensfromoutsidethecircuitcourts ." In later years this pattern continued with judges appointed exclusivelyby membersofthelegislatureratherthanelectedjudicialofficialsuntilpromptly dissolving these circuits upon expirationofthe 10yearperiodforwhichtheywere constituted ."
