Buford is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, on the edge of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The population was 25,000 as of 2000. It is the county seat of Buford County. In 1861, it was named for General and Mrs. Hernando Buford, who had been governor of Alabama at the time and served as a delegate to the Confederate Congress. In 1819, General Nathan Bedford Forrest set out from Chattanooga to attack Atlanta and discovered that he needed supplies to take part in his campaign; he decided to move his army into what would become known as Forrest's Tennessee Valley Campaign later that year. He ordered Major James Moultrie to establish a military post at present-day Buford Creek so that he could control access to water supplies essential for his troops during their march southward through Georgia. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter (now Savannah), General Robert Ewell decided to retreat rather than fight against an entire Union army; this decision led directly to Ewell's death two years later at Second Bull Run near Manassas Junction while leading Union forces against Confederate General Stonewall Jackson

Buford is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 20,817 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Buford was founded in 1814 as a small community on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. In 1865, when Alabama became a state and Buford became its capital, it lost its status as a small town but continued to grow with cotton production until 1972 when that industry declined nationally. The city's first mayor was Herschel Walker and it incorporated on December 3, 1814. A post office called "Buford" was established in 1821, and remained in operation until 1903. The city's first street name was "Church Street." The present downtown area was developed between 1870 and 1880 by Jno Epps and others under his supervision. At this time what are now Wacker Drive (northwest corner), Peachtree Road (east corner), Griffin Avenue (southwest corner), Central Avenue (southeast corner) were all sections of what is now Clinton Avenue. In 1886–87 James Fenton built one ofAtlanta's largest waterworks – for which he received an award from President Grover Cleveland – on West Dunwoody Boulevard adjacent to current-day Northwestern High School; Fenton renamed it Municipal Water Supply Company after becoming Mayor of Atlanta in 1888). In 1902 Buford annexed approximately 1/4 mile (.50 km) east of its original downtown core along what is now Midtown Boulevard due to a vote by City Council members related to problems with streetcar service within town limits caused by ownership by two different companies: First National Bank & Trust Company’s line extending into town served mostly residents outside the limits while Atlantans living inside had no access; Second National Bank’s line serving citizens inside also extended into town Limits; lack of funding from privately funded transportation efforts led manager William Hartsfield III to purchase both lines one year later for $1 million dollars making Buford becomearter independent from cities throughout south Georgia including Athens, Decatur & Savannah

As of the 2010 census, the population was 116,811. The name "Buford" is derived from "BUFFER" meaning a hill or mound in Cherokee language, and as such it was given to this town by General John Bullington in 1803 while he was commanding an army in eastern Alabama. The town site was chosen because its high ground protect against raids by Creek Indians and other Indian attackers seeking revenge for what they considered British unfair treatment during the American Revolution.
