The Buford Army Depot was founded in 1917 as a munitions plant. It became the world's largest army munitions depot when it opened in 1918 and remained so until 1986. The depot produced over one million rounds of ammunition per day, making it one of the most important military suppliers in the United States. During World War I, the Buford Army Depot supplied arms to both sides of the war. In 1919, it became part of the newly formed American Chemical Company and began producing chemical weapons for use in World War II. After America's entry into World War II, the Buford Army Depot was among those that produced armaments for America's allies as well. The depot continued to produce munitions until its closure in 1986. Today, the Buford Army Depot retains a significant role within Georgia's defense sector and is known for its production of artillery ammunition and other supplies for military purposes. The depot is also home to a museum which contains artifacts from its history.

The Buford, Georgia Army Garrison was activated on November 1, 1861. The unit was organized as a three-month recruiting campaign in response to the American Civil War. On December 12, 1861, the first regiment of the Buford garrison fought in the Battle of Peachtree Creek. Four days later, they participated in the Battle of Chickamauga where they were again engaged and lost one man killed and six wounded. After Chickamauga, the regiment performed garrison duty at Atlanta until September 1862 when they were transferred to Tennessee to participate in General Ulysses S. Grant'sening Expedition against Hood's Confederate army northeast of Chattanooga. This engagement resulted in two men being killed and five wounded before they were relieved by an infantry brigade from Arkansas on October 3rd. On October 15th, 1862, the Buford garrison was ordered back east to Tennessee to join General Robert Ewell's army for his offensive against Richmond. On November 11th, 1862 their unit took part in what is now known as Black Sunday when Ewell's army attacked Petersburg without having received orders from higher headquarters. Confederate forces at that time numbered over 30 thousand with twelve brigades under Johnston and four under Lee totaling thirty-six thousand nine hundred soldiers total including skirmishers and artillery batteries numbering several hundred pieces each). The battle lasted three days with Union losses totaling twenty-one officers and 548 enlisted men Killed or Wounded (K/W) = 21 Officers & 548 Enlisted Men
Buford, Georgia is a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area and is located about fifty miles northeast of Atlanta. The name Buford originated from the Creek word "bufon" meaning “a warthog” and "ford", which refers to a meadow where white men used to tether their warthogs for hunting purposes. The first settler in what is now Buford was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1796 with his father and brother-in-law, John Toddridge. In 1815, Alexander McDowell purchased land from Caldwell and named it Buford after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's home county in North Carolina. When Governor Zebulon Pike issued an executive order calling for all Cherokee Indians east of the Arkansas River to be removed under orders from President James K. Polk on December 10,1835, many residents of Buford voted not to support him because they knew he would order their removal if they did not leave voluntarily. In 1865, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, federal troops burned down several homes and stores in retaliation for Confederate protests against military rule throughout most of Georgia; this set off a series of events that led to Georgians organizing themselves into groups called "Redeemers" to resist military occupation and Reconstruction efforts by local forces loyal to Southern Republicans instead of Northern Democrats like themselves. On April 14, 1866—one week before Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House—General Robert Ewell ordered General George Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment (the "Cavalrymen's Own") southward along US Highway 1 through downtown Buford on horseback towards Dahlonega Hills when they were met by gunfire from civilians armed with shotguns and muskets who had gathered around buildingsblocks leading up Locust Street towards US Highway 31). After Custer's troopers dispersed without taking any prisoners or destroying any propertygianedepot or other important infrastructure,[1][2] members of Redeemer counterattack[3] successfully drove off Federal cavalrymen[4] until large numbers of Union soldiers arrived en masse from surrounding towns including Athens (US Route 11), Duluth (USRoute 231), Marietta (USRoute 20), Griffin (USRoute 22)and Kennesaw Mountain National Park (SR16). A large skirmish ensued during which over 50 citizens killed 12 Union soldiers while another 25 were wounded; three Confederates were also killed.[5][6][7] This action helped initiate what became known as the Battle Of Dahlonega Hill,[8] one of numerous bloody episodes during Reconstruction that ultimately undermined both sides' claims to legitimacy.[9]:407–409 By 1870 Roanoke Island had been transferred back into Virginia effective January 1st so there was no longer an Overland Mail route between Savannah and Richmond through central Georgia; however mail continued passing through Buford until February 9th when its last delivery passed through Dahlonega Hill.[10]:390 In 1970s Interstate 285 project began moving traffic away from town center onto new expressways which has resulted in decreased population growth rate (−1%) although some businesses have closed since 2000 due to lack of customers
