The first permanent settler in what is now Brunswick was John Smythe in 1819. He built a log cabin on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River and named it "Smythe's Mill." In 1820, he married Sarah Cobb and moved to what is now downtown Brunswick. Smythe Store was one of the earliest businesses in town. In 1830, Reverend James Gadsden founded Gadsden College in Brunswick and taught school there for twenty years before moving to nearby Decatur to open a seminary. In 1871, Commodore Matthew Perry landed his flagship on the riverbank and visited Brunswick for the first time. The event helped start commercial development in Brunswick and has been cited as an important event that started the growth of Atlanta. Today, many residents are descendants of those who participated during early settlement days including John Smythe (1819-1920), Sarah Cobb (1820-1900), James Gadsden (1830-1872), Commodore Matthew Perry (1794-1865), Reverend James Gadsden (1871-1948) and Mrs. Jens Aagaard Perrin (bdates unknown). Many notable buildings or sites from early days include Smythe Store building which still stands today as well as Gadsden College where Commodore Perry met with local officials prior to his arrival at Augusta Harbor on April 6th 1865; Centerville Methodist Church; First Baptist Church; Masonic Lodge No 1; county courthouse which still stands today along with several other contributing properties Valley Forge Baptist Church also located hereabouts; Mrs Aagaard Perrin's home which still stands today within walking distance of Centerville Methodist Church & First Baptist Chapel across from Valley Forge Baptist Church

Brunswick, Georgia is a small town located in the southwestern corner of the state of Georgia. The population was 5,389 at the 2010 census. Brunswick was founded in 1837 by General William Troup and his family as a post office on the Chattahoochee River. The town grew rapidly after it was named for Brunswick, England, where General Troup had been stationed during the Seminole Wars. In 1882, General James Longstreet moved his headquarters from Chattanooga to Brunswick and later became its mayor. In 1906, Brunswick became an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000. The town lost its status as a city after it failed to meet certain requirements set by the state government. It re-emerged as a small community in 2009 when it won approval from the Georgia Municipal Commission to become an independent municipality once again with a population of 6,000 residents. The history of Brunswick goes back to 1837 when General William Troup and his family settled there after being given permission by Governor Andrew Jackson to establish a post office on the Chattahoochee River. The post office quickly became popular due to its close proximity to Atlanta and its easy access to goods that made up Georgian culture at that time such as maize (corn), beans (pinto beans), breadfruit (a fruit that is often eaten raw), watermelons (maize-like crops) and fresh oranges (oranges). In addition, because there were no roads in those days, people would often walk or ride their horses around town which helped contribute to its rapid growth rate over the years. After becoming mayor, he began making changes within Brunswick which included improving infrastructure such as opening up local businesses into larger stores so they could sell more products tax-wise; building new public buildings such as schools; and encouraging recreational activities like playing football on Sundays or fishing on Saturdays for locals & visitors alike. After several years of work within Brunswick's government structure, Greater Atlanta began forming what would become known as Atlantia County which took effect in 1886 when Fulton County was created from parts of Clayton County west of downtown Atlanta along with several smaller counties including DeKalb County east of downtown Atlanta and Gwinnett County north of downtownAtlanta This new county structure left much room for improvement within Atlantia County so Mayor Longstreet decided that it would make more sense for him move his operations westward into what would become known as Cobb County instead since this area had been underdeveloped compared to other areas within Atlantia County . This decision allowed him greater autonomy while still remaining inside Atlantia County while also giving him closer access both politically & administratively to Greater Atlanta .
