On December 12th while all around town soldiers were being deployed to guard Fort McAllister (now Fairfield), residents boycotted dinner at local restaurants out of concern that Confederate troops might be dining there instead given their siege mentality towards any military installations within striking distance). As night fell units began streaming into the town from surrounding plantations where they were quartered pending orders to retreat; many residents decided it would be safer to stay put rather than go back home when they could not guarantee safety should Confederate forces arrive unannounced next morning (December 13th).
