When Atlanta began to grow as a town, it was the site of a few small businesses that provided coffee for local residents and visitors. In 1892, George W. White opened White’s Coffee House in what is now Peachtree Center. The first roast of coffee beans arrived from Ethiopia at this shop, which soon became an institution in the city. By 1912, White had moved his business to 7th Street NE and continued roasting beans until his death in 1955. During the 1920s and 1930s, Brunswick experienced its own growth as a center for cotton production and manufacturing in Georgia. This led to an increase in demand for quality coffee beans from around the world. One such company that supplied Brunswick with high-quality coffee was Philips Coffee Company. Philips was founded by Dutch businessmen Hendrik Philips and Cornelius Van der Linde in 1886 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The company operated several cafes throughout Europe before moving its operations toAtlantain 1916. Philips became one of the largest roasters of coffee in the United States and exported its beans all over the world. In 1948, when MARTA started operations through downtown Atlanta, Philips Coffee decided to open their own station on Lamar Boulevard NE inside MARTA’s new rail terminal building (now MARTA Headquarters). This marked THE FIRST COFFEEHOUSE IN AUGUSTA THAT SERVED HOT BREWING COFFEE FROM START TO FINISH!
