Brunswick is a small city in the U.S. state of Georgia, on the Savannah River. The population was 9,491 at the 2010 census. Brunswick is part of the Greater Atlanta Metropolitan Area and is located about 22 miles (35 km) southwest of downtown Atlanta. Brunswick's economy is based primarily on manufacturing and service sectors such as education, health care, transportation, and retail businesses. The first Europeans to visit what is now Brunswick were Frenchmen in 1607 who named it "Brunswick". In 1728, a General James Oglethorpe founded what became Oglethorpe University in present-day Brunswick County. The first white settlers arrived in 1820 from South Carolina and began to homestead around what would become downtown Brunswick. In 1831 they founded the town of Dalton which later became Athens before being renamed Fulton in 1878 after Fulton County was created from portions of Cobb and Gwinnett counties. AfterAtlanta's incorporation as a city in 1887, many new businesses moved into downtown including breweries and carpenters' shops; this prompted by mayor John Fisk to renametowns after their principal business districts: North Avenue ( afterwards Northbridge Road ), East Avenue (later Easton Drive ), West Avenue (now West Street), and Main Street (then Main Street Plaza ). In 1886 local dentist Driggs bought land adjacent to what is now Kinnel Park for $2 per acre ($40 per lot). He built his own hospital/ dental office on this property which he called First Baptist Hospital; today it remains one of the most prominent buildings in downtown Brunswick. Driggs also donated land for four blocks northeast of Main Street between 20th Avenue NW and 21st Avenue NW known as Druid Hills Park which served as an open-air shopping mall until 1985 when it was converted into schools again with an attached park also known as Druid Hills Park School District headquarters before becoming Homebuilders Development Center Incorporated earlier this year while still operated by Homebuilders Development Company LLC.). Brunswick, Georgia is a small town located in the southeast corner of Fulton County, Georgia. Brunswick was founded in 1821 by General James A. Jackson and his wife, Sarah. The first post office was established in Brunswick on October 12, 1825. The present courthouse was built in 1886 and is one of the oldest courthouses in Fulton County. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House here after failing to capture Petersburg stronghold Virginia Beach. The townspeople quickly rebuilt their homes and businesses following the surrender and soon developed into a prosperous community with a population of around 2,500 residents in 1870. In 1898, Brunswick became the seat of government for portions of southeastern Fulton County following incorporation from parts of Chattahoochee and DeKalb Counties to form that area’s new county government under the provisions of the General Assembly Act No. 7 (1898). As part of this effort to consolidate local government within newly created counties, Brunswick assumed its current name from neighboring Dunbar Townsite which had been abandoned by its previous owners because they lacked interest or experience in farming such an inhospitable terrain. In 1913, due to increased development along I-85 through adjacent Cobb County, Brunswick reverted back to its original name when it reincorporated as a city within that county pursuant to Section 4-3-10(a) of the Service District Law (1913). This change also resulted in a corresponding increase in its population to over 10,000 residents by 1914 thanks largely to heavy investment by developers throughout both Atlanta proper and northwestern Cobb County; this section now forms much of downtown Brunswick’s core business districts today. During World War II munitions production moved from Dalton GA into nearby Brunswick but most production stopped during 1945 due to shortages caused primarily by US military strategy changes which called for less reliance on Britain for war materials while at the same time Japan began developing an atomic bomb; however some construction did take place with continued use of old munitions facilities until 1949 before finally ceasing altogether two years later when all surface nuclear weapons were detonated at Plant Vogtle outside Athens GA!
