Bainbridge is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,873 at the 2010 census. Bainbridge is located on the Flint River and is considered to be part of the Savannah metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1814 by General James Moultrie and his wife Elizabeth: they named it after Lt. Gov. John Banbridge of Scotland who had come over as an American official during the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The original settlers were Baptist missionaries from Tennessee who arrived in 1795 and built a chapel on what is now Main Street. After some time, Baptist missionaries expelled by the Creek Indian Tribe moved to Bainbridge in 1807 and founded another chapel there; this one still stands today (it was destroyed by fire in 1905). In 1827, local man Nicholas Bemis organized a group of farmers to build a road from Athens to Marietta through Bainbridge; this became known as the "Moultrie Road". By 1830, local farmers were producing cotton, wheat, corn, potatoes and tobacco for sale at various stores around town. In 1840, Andrew White established a ferry across the Flint River near present-day Baytown for transportation of goods between Bainbridge and Savannah; this Ferry has been professionally operated since 1903. The first school in Bainbridge opened on October 14th, 1829 with 10 students; it was replaced by Presentation Academy which opened on December 5th of that year after being built on land donated by Mrs Justice Hoggs (the mother of future Governorof Georgia Thomas Fenton Hoggs.). On February 1st 1860 (the date marked as “Fulton Countyâ€Birthplace Dayâ€), Wm Silliman purchased 640 acres extending eastward from present-day Main Street along both banks of the Flint River.; he called this tract “Banbridge Bottom†because it lay just below where he would later build his mansion – now known as Hoggs Mansion – on what is now Second Avenue Southwest in downtown Atlanta.. From 1861 until 1865 (during Reconstruction), Bainbridge served as headquarters for Confederate General Robert Ewell during his campaign against Union General Ulysses S Grant.. Some interesting facts about Bainbridge include that: - There are no streets or business districts within city limits like there are within most cities today - There are only two hotels within city limits: The Georgian House & Steele House - Other than that everything else within city limits can be found either mixed use or residential buildings - There have been few changesover time since 1800 when many people primarily lived off agriculture
