The military has been a part of Bainbridge, Georgia for over three hundred years. The first soldiers that arrived in the area were actually refugees from Kentucky. In 1802, the United States built Fort Moultrie on Bainbridge Island in order to protect its coastline from British aggression. This fort was later renamed Fort Pickens and served as an artillery battery during the American Revolution. As time went on, more troops began to arrive in Bainbridge and other parts of Georgia. Many of these soldiers were needed to help build roads and bridges as well as garrison forts. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, leading to the Civil War. The military presence in Bainbridge continued through the war and after it ended, many soldiers returned home. Some stayed and helped manage local businesses while others moved on to new careers or deployments abroad. Today, there are still active military units stationed here including the 3rd Battalion (Airborne) Georgia Infantry Regiment which is currently deployed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma Washington; and 2nd Battalion (Infantry) Georgia National Guard which is also currently deployed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma Washington

The regiment was mustered into service on October 16, 1861 and served until July 1865. During the war, the unit lost an estimated 210 men killed or mortally wounded.
Bainbridge is a small town in rural Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Bainbridge is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Bainbridge community was established in 1837 as a result of the construction of the Chattahoochee River Railroad. The community name may be derived from "bain" meaning "to wash" and "bridge" meaning an overpass or crossing. The first settler in Bainbridge was John Bain, who arrived in 1837 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1839, George Washington Bain purchased land east of present-day Main Street and erected a log cabin known as Cabin No. 2 (now known as Old Main). A post office called Bainbridge was founded in 1841, and Larkin & Company became its first licensed mail carrier in 1861. In 1865, when Atlanta was acquired by the United States government as part of the Compromise of 1867, Bainbridge became part of newly created Fulton County under President Abraham Lincoln's executive order #2111(). After Reconstruction ended with Black Americans re-entering society following World War II, much development took place in Bainbridge during this time period includinginfrastructure improvements such as better roads and bridges which helped to spur economic growth throughout Fulton County Additionally, many local businesses were established during this time including Attucks Fruits & Agricultural Store which operated from 1942 until it closed in 1990 In 1984, downtown Bainbridge celebrated its 100th anniversary with an event that included speeches by then Mayor Hank Johnson Additionally, many cultural artifacts from early days are still available for purchase or viewing at various locations within the community including contributing factors to its unique identity today Today there are several primary industries that continue to heavily support the local economy such as agriculture; manufacturing; construction; education; tourism; and service providers
