Since its establishment in 1845, Augusta, Georgia's first commercial coffeehouse was the Coffee House on Broad Street. The business became a popular stop for local residents and visitors looking for a cup of Joe. By 1861, the Coffee House had been sold to Mr. J.H. Smith, who operated it as the Brunswick Tavern until his death in 1881. In 1886, King George V granted Augusta an honorary charter from the Crown Colony of British Guiana (nowGuyana). This allowed for the city to become self-governing with its own mayor and City Council. In 1898, Augusta's first grocery store opened and served as an early node in what would be one of Savannah's long-standing food traditions dating back to 1775 when General James Oglethorpe imported Indian cornmeal into town for his troops during the American Revolution. The early years of Augusta's coffee history were marked by many milestones including: - The opening in 1865 of the SWRR Railroad which connected Augusta with Savannah; - The purchase by Mr. Smith of a large plantation near present day Thomson Road; - The purchase by Aiken & Sons Pty Ltd., operators of what is now known as "The Daily News" Newspaper Building on Broad Street in 1888; and finally, Mr. Smith's death in 1881 which ended any hopes that Augusta would become an important center for coffee production outside Savannah

In 1892, a small coffee shop opened in downtown Augusta. It was the first coffee shop in Augusta and is still open today. The coffee shop served java, espresso, and milk products. In 1912, the first restaurant opened in downtown Augusta and it was called the Atrium Restaurant. It served American cuisine andalcoholics could not be admitted. In 1916, the city of Augusta established its own fire department and the Atrium Restaurant became their station house. The first restaurant manager was H C Howell who also ran the grocery store next door on White Street. In 1926, J F Sibley bought the property that housed the Atrium Restaurant and turned it into a movie theater which he named The Globe Theatre after his home state of Georgia's then-largest city, Atlanta. Mrs Sibley allowed her husband to rename it as The Globe Theatre after she died in 1951. By 1954, only theatre films were shown at The Globe Theatre while regular movies continued to be shown at nearby Regal cinemas until 1967 when they all moved to Auburn Hills Michigan due to budget cuts by then-Governor George Wallace's administration
Augusta, Georgia is a city located in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 153,242 at the 2010 census and was estimated to be 200,731 in 2015. Augusta is the county seat of Fulton County. It was founded on December 12, 1817 by General James Wilkinson as a dry goods and market town named for his wife Augusta (née Ruffin). The name may have come from an early settler's daughter who had blue eyes like her father and mother. In 1822, Wilkinson renamed it after himself – Augusta County – in honor of his wife's uncle General James A. Walton (1779-1859), commander of United States forces during the Mexican War and later Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson (1829-1835). The first post office was established in 1825; it moved to its present location in 1830. Augusta became a city on December 12, 1847 following the passage of Georgia State Constitution No. 1 (Article XI), which granted city status to all towns within Fulton County with a population over 5,000 people. On October 2nd, 1950, Southeast Airlines Flight 848 crashed into downtown Augusta after takeoff from Atlanta International Airport killing all 149 passengers and six crew members aboard

Augusta was founded in 1788 and named for General James Augustus Augusta. The first post office in Augusta opened on October 15, 1825. In 1836, the name of the town was changed to Milton after John Milton, an early settler in the area Theodore Roosevelt spent his childhood summers at Camp David in Augusta when he was a boy and later attended nearby Dunbar School. He became interested in politics while living there and attended Auburn University before serving as governor of New York from 1909 to 1911 and as president from 1912 to 1913. After leaving office, he returned to Augusta where he lived until his death in 1932. In 1933 he was inducted into the United States Naval Academy's Class of 1918.
