Augusta, Georgia is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the county seat of Clayton County. The population was 25,711 as of the 2010 census[1] and was expected to grow to 30,000 by 2020,[2] making Augusta one of the most populous cities in Georgia. It is also home to Auburn University, one of the largest research universities in America. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Augusta on February 14, 1733, when Captain James Cook sailed into Savannah Bay with his primary goal of exploring new land and finding passage to Australia.[3] The settlement was named for Queen Anne's governor general, Lord Augustus Herbert de Montagu (1688–1750). The town grew rapidly during the 18th century; by 1780 it had a population of over 120 people. In 1784 General James Wilkinson founded a hospital here which became known as "Wilkinson's Hospital".[4][5] During the American Revolution, Augusta served as an important military base for General George Washington’s army during their march on Richmond Heights and Battle at Yorktown. On October 12, 1785, George Washington presented King George III with a gift from Governor Edmund Randolph – A set of cannons donated by Colonel John Sevier – that helped secure Augusta’s independence from Great Britain[6]. Afterward many homes were built here because the abundance of wood made getting lumber impossible outside central Atlanta proper. In 1831 Quincy Adams became president pro tempore of the United States Senate after being elected as a Democrat from New Hampshire following Andrew Jackson's victory in that year's presidential election[7]. He would later become vice president under Franklin D. Roosevelt before dying at age 94 on April 12, 1945.<8> After Adams' death two days earlier than planned he was constitutionally majority leader but did not take office until Vice President Harry S Truman took office on January 20.<9> Truman then appointed Arthur Haysbert to succeed him while Haysbert served out Eisenhower's final two years in office<10>. When Dwight D. Eisenhower died suddenly after less than three months in office on November 8, 1958 his widow Jacqueline took over running her husband's stores and administration until her son John F Kennedy assumed power when RFK succeeded him<11>. With JFK stepped down due to assassination attempts against him both Camelot-born Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Richard Nixon (R-CA) unsuccessfully ran for his father's vacated Senate seat(It should be noted that JFK never termed himself anything other than an attorney general)[12]). In 1964 Mayor William Rehnquist ordered all public buses stopped because they were believed to have been used by radical Ku Klux Klan members who had infiltrated Mayor Rehnquist's black political organization called "The New Negro Party". <13> Although this incident remains controversial today no charges were ever filed against anyone involved.<14> With little more than 100 residents living within walking distance outside downtown limits by 1960 there were plans underway for growth beyond downtown limits if funding could be secured however those plans never came true.<16>: Downtown development continued sporadically without much success up until around 2000 when plans began again for developing surrounding neighborhoods including its current incarnation - Midtown - which occurred between 2001-2005

In 1830, the first courthouse was built and served as the court house until 1901 when it moved to its current location across from the Georgia Capitol building. In 1861, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest captured and burned the local arsenal, which destroyed many homes and businesses within blocks of downtown Augusta. This event is considered one of the most notorious attacks against civilian targets during the American Civil War.
