Augusta is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the county seat of Sullivan County. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous municipality in Sullivan County. Augusta has been called "the Athens of the South" for its strategic location on two major east-west trade routes. The town's rich history goes back to 1784 when General James Wilkinson founded what is now known as Augusta as a trading post on the Savannah River. The first white person to set foot in Augusta was Captain John Winthrop who arrived there in 1784 with his ship "Plymouth". In 1802, Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest established Fort Walton which served as an artillery outpost during the Creek War against Georgia militia forces led by Andrew Jackson. In 1814, General Nathan Bedford Forrest founded what is now known as Fort Pillow at what is now milepost 5 on State Route 129 near present-day downtown Augusta. Forts Pillow and Fort Strother were among several forts built along this stretch of state road during Governor James Kenedy's efforts to secure land grants from Spain in order to build a military installation within Spanish territory that would serve as an obstacle to British expansion into Florida. The grant included 8 miles (12 km) of toll road leading from Fort Strother downriver to Pensacola Bayou where boats could be unloaded and transported inland across Pensacola Bayou without having to go through Spanish territory again. Afterward, King George III authorized construction of roads throughout Florida by ordering Secretary Georigus Williams to survey all manner of routes so that proposed linkages between different parts of the colony could be developed without infringing upon native land ownership claims by Seminole and Cherokee Indians who had long inhabited these areas. One such route involved building a road from Mobile Bayous crossing Stroudsburg Creek near present-day Milledgeville and ascending Madras Creek until it reached Pensacola Bayou where ferryboats could take passengers inland across Pensacola Bayou before being transferred onto trains heading southbound along US Highway 1 towards Jacksonville, FL
