Since the Revolutionary War, the Army has been an important part of Georgia's history. The first military units in Georgia were organized in 1775 as a regiment of dragoons under Colonel Christopher Gist. The unit was redesignated as a battalion in 1779 and then 1st Regiment,Georgia Infantry in 1781. In 1802, the 1st Regiment was redesignated 2nd Regiment and fought at Stone Mountain and Cowpens during the Creek War. In 1812, Georgia became a state and the 1st Regiment was redesignated 3rd Regiment of Georgia Infantry. In 1815, it served under General Simon Bolivar with distinction at Battle of Chickamauga where he received a brevet promotion to lieutenant colonel. After serving under General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), the regiment participated in several campaigns including Drury Lane Hill (1849), Missionary Ridge (1850), Savannah (1851) and Apalachicola Bayou (1853). It also fought at Second Seminole War (1855-56) and Siege of Mobile Bay (1859). The 3rd Regiment was reorganized as 5th Battalion,GA Infantry on November 15, 1862; 6th Battalion on January 16, 1865; 7th Battalion on February 9, 1865; 8th Battalion on March 11, 1865; 9th Battalion on April 13, 1865; 10th Battalion on May 14 1865 and finally 11th Battalion effective June 25 1865. On October 26 1861 Confederate general Robert Ewell ordered all infantry regiments except for those commanded by Major General John C Hood to march to Richmond accompanied by artillerymen for battle against Union general Ulysses S Grant who had landed there from New York City with about 5000 troops expecting to besiege Richmond. On December 12 1861 Hood’s brigade reachedRichmond but found that only 4500 men could be brought up so they withdrew back into Petersburg .On January 5 1862 Maj Gen Hood reported that his brigade had arrived too late so his order went out commandeering all available artillerymen from other brigades to join him at Petersburg which resulted in 600 casualties due to illness among them being 22 percent fatalities compared to Grant’s loss rate of 0 percent when only 8000 soldiers were present at Drewry Lane Hills combined engagement
