He visited Indonesia and found that the people there drank “a drink made with pounded green pepper boiled with milk and water”. This drink is thought to have originated in Java, where trade routes crossed. Coffee was also mentioned in Indian scriptures such as the Mahabharata (circa 1000 BC) and the Vedas (circa 1500 BC).
