Atlanta, Georgia is known as the coffee capital of the world. The city has been home to two of the largest coffee roasters in the world, Peet's Coffee and Dunkin' Donuts, since the early 20th century. In addition to its namesake coffeehouses, Atlanta also has a number of smaller businesses that sell coffee. These small-batch coffee businesses have helped make Atlanta one of the most important areas for coffee history in the United States. The first small batch coffee shop was founded in 1915 by Abe Levy and His Sons. Levy had started his own grocery store in downtown Atlanta and decided to open a store specializing in fresh roasted beans from around the world. This was the first time that anyone had ventured into this new market for specialty coffees. The success of this store led Levy and his sons to start their own business: Levy's Coffee Company. Levy's Coffee Company quickly became one of Atlanta's most popular cafes. The company continued to grow throughout World War II and into the 1960s when it opened its second location on Piedmont Avenue in Midtown Atlanta. The company soon became well known for its high quality beans and unique packaging methods, which made it one of the few companies able to survive during difficult times during those years (such as during Watergate). In 1977, Levy sold his company to Peet's Coffee Corporation for $1 million dollars ($18 million today). Peet's Coffee Corporation quickly began making changes within Levy's Coffee Company. For example, they introduced drip brewing which greatly simplified bean preparation processes (and allowed them to produce more consistent cups each time). They also began selling pre-packaged blends which gave customers more control over their beverage choices than they could at other cafés at that time (this trend continued through much of Peet's ownership). Finally, they introduced pour-overs which allowed customers to mix different types of beans together before drinking them Today, Peet’s Coffee continues its legacy as one of America’s leading premium coffee brands with a focus on small batch roastings that are meticulously prepared with attention to detail – each cup is unique!
