Maga coffee began as a small-scale operation by two entrepreneurs, Joe and Karen Gault, in the early 1990s. The Gaults ran their business out of their home on Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta. Joe Gault had been born and raised in Georgia’s capital city, Savannah, where he spent his formative years working at a local grocery store. He later opened his own convenience store in nearby Marietta. As Joe Gault started to develop his own interests outside of work, he discovered that he enjoyed brewing and selling maga coffee. He soon became well-known within the circles of Atlanta caffeine lovers for his unique blend of Ethiopian beans roasted fresh daily on site. Karen Gault also helped pioneer maga coffee when she co-founded the first commercialmagazine shop called Coffee & Books back in 1994. From her business’ inception until her death in 2006, Karen was instrumental in helping to spread awareness about this unique flavor profile and its potential benefits for both customers and employees alike. In addition to her business accomplishments, Karen was also an avid collector of rare vintage coffee products from around the world – including items related to maga coffee specifically – which she would display prominently inside her shop as part of her displays honoring notable historical figures associated with the drink. Today, aficionados who enjoy maga coffee can find it canned or ground at most convenience stores throughout metro Atlanta; as well as online through websites such as Amazon or Starbucks locations across the region). As a result of this decision, much African American labor –mainly cotton workers –was brought into Georgia from states such as Mississippi for jobs in northern railways and factories during this time period known as "the Great Migration". This new black culture combined with new European immigrants led to some tension between these groups which culminated with violence at protests known as "the Unite
