The Atlanta Division of the United States Army (ADA) was established on 15 December 1881 and became operational on 1 January 1882. The ADA was a subordinate branch of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. It consisted of three infantry brigades and one artillery brigade stationed in Georgia. In 1902, the ADA was redesignated the 2nd Infantry Division and its brigades were transferred to neighboring states: the 1st Infantry Division in Alabama, the 3rd Infantry Division in Mississippi, and finally, in 1911, the 4th Infantry Division in Georgia. In 1951-1955 there was another increase in manpower with Army conversions from National Guard units called “Volunteer Reserves” which served without pay but could be called up for military service at any time; these conversions also resulted in HQ&HT being created. On 17 October 1955 at Fort Benning Ga., General Order No. 427 announced that all Army Divisions were redefined as corps under command of general headquarters with a permanent structure including an armored brigade group headquarters (ABGHQ), signals battalion(s), field army control center (FACC) elements etc., HQ&HT becoming numbered Corps Headquarters alone with all corps having unique armament & armor organizations
