The Atlanta, Georgia Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The unit was originally organized as the 3rd Regiment of Georgians in 1802. The regiment was redesignated the 1st Regiment of Georgians in 1807 and then again, the 3rd Regiment of Georgians in 1815. In 1818, the regiment was redesignated as the 2nd Regiment of Georgia Infantry and served in various campaigns throughout central and southern America. On September 25th, 1861, during Confederate secession efforts, the 2nd Regiment of Georgia Infantry fought at Battle Of White Sands against Union forces under General Robert E. Lee. Afterward, many soldiers from this regiment joined Confederate service and eventually constituted part of General Johnston's army march north to join Grant's forces at battles such as Cold Harbor and Monmouth Junction. However, most units from this regiment were soon mustered out or disbanded following hostilities ceased on April 9th 1865. Following World War II, many members ofAtlanta's Army National Guard re-joined society with their families intact. In 1951, Governor Strom Thurmond established the Atlanta National Guardsmen Museum which artifacts from both local military history (e.g., uniforms) as well as international arms trafficking cases are on display today across five floors within MARTA rail stations including Centennial Park Station (zone 5), Fulton Center Station (zone 4), Peoples Temple Station (zone 3), Macon/Emmons Road Station (zone 2), and Marietta/Dawsonville station (zone 1). Additionally there is an exhibit located inside MARTA’s Gwinnett County Control Facility that tells all about human traffic flow through I-85 during peak hours while also showcasing a model train track built by Atlanta Arsenal Company Ltd.. Tours are availablethree times per day: 10am - 4pm Saturdays; 11am - 4pm Sundays;and 12pm -4pm Mondays at these locations only.)
