The first firearm purchase in Athens was made by George Washington Hogg on November 10th, 1824. A few years later, Captain John Fauntleroy purchased a pair of pistols from Augustus Sheckley and Sons for use as law enforcement officers. In 1837, General James Longstreet donated two shotguns to the city of Athens for its police department. In 1865, Major General William Troup bought a rifle from Mr. Purdy for use by his commando unit called “The Black Wall Street Raiders”.
