The United States Navy has a rich history in Athens, Georgia. The first U.S. Naval Station in the city was established in 1825 and operated as the U.S. Naval Observatory until 1829. The USS Constitution, an American sailing vessel, was moored at the Naval station from 1795 to 1800 while Washington was visiting Athens. During World War II, the naval station served as a base for operations for the Allied Forces Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (AMTOO). After the war, NAS Athens became part of the newly created National Defense Reserve Fleet and remained inactive until it reopened in 1987 as part of NAS Savannah’s environmental restoration program following Hurricane Katrina’s landfall on August 29th that year. Today, NAS Athens is home to three active Navy ships: USS Enterprise (CVN-74), USS Lexington (CVN-61) and USS George H.W. Bush (CG-4). In 1984, Mayor Jimmy Carter announced plans for downtown redevelopment that would create new jobs and increase public access to cultural resources such as art galleries and theaters. The project was met with protest from opponents who felt that it would concentrate economic power within downtown while leaving much of their neighborhoods behind.
