Athene was founded in 1781 by the brothers George and James Fayette, who named it in honor of Athens, Georgia's patron goddess. The city grew rapidly during the 18th century as a result of its strategic location on the Chattahoochee River and its access to the then-new transportation system, the riverboat trade. By 1800, Athens had become one of the leading centers of commerce in Georgia. In 1802, Athens became an independent republic under a charter from James Kenedy. It was annexed by Alabama in 1835 but regained its independence as a republic in 1861. During Reconstruction (1868-1877), Athens played an important role in supporting white supremacy and conservative Republican Party policies while experiencing significant social unrest that led to several political assassinations and general disorder. In 1896, Athens became an incorporated city with a mayor and City Council elected at large rather than through party nomination or election. The city experienced great growth during World War II until it was bombed by Japanese forces on April 6, 1942. Afterward, much reconstruction took place including new downtown buildings such as Hotel Convent and Convention Center; however, many aspects of Athenian life were still struggling after World War II. Reconstruction efforts finally ended with Atlanta's incorporation into the United States in 1973. Since then, much redevelopment has taken place withinAtlanta but some aspects remain untouched such as old downtown areas which are popular for nightlife and architecture buffs alike Athene has had numerous mayors over time including Jeptha Whitehead (1905-1908), William Hartsfield III (1945-1948), Artie Hawkins (1949-1951), John Cagle (1963-1967), Marvin Nash (1968-1970), Bernice King (1972-1976) and current Mayor Kasim Reed
