An Athens, Georgia history begins with the early history of the city. The first human beings to live in Athens were the Hahns who arrived in 1795 from what is now Germany. They built a small village on the north bank of the Scioto River and named it Ehrenfeld after their patron saint, Emanuel Johannes Chrysolophus. From this small village, people traveled overland to Athens for religious services and trade meetings. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson led an expedition against the Creek Indians and burned down Ehrenfeld. The town was destroyed but not lost; it was rebuilt by Dutch settlers in 1811-12 as a trading post on Clifton Hill overlooking downtown Athens. The American Revolution began in 1775 and ended with independence in 1783. On April 6, 1800, Georgia became a United States state and Athens became its capital. The city's growth came after Commodore John Troup sailed his ship “Hancock” upriver from Savannah on November 14, 1800, to attack Spanish Fort on August 2, 1802. When he arrived at anchor off present day Grady Street pier about two miles west of downtown (the site of today's State Capitol), he called out: "Injoice or be destroyed." Captain James Fannin responded that if attacked they would defend themselves “to the last man." After some debate within his council Minute Book entries reflect that Troup founded no permanent settlements in what is now downtown Athens but lay claim to all east Tennessee land west of Cumberland Gap—a claim which still remains unconfirmed today The first African American born into slavery occurred when Nancy Baker was born free on October 12th, 1819 near what is now Third Street and Broadwalk Avenue in Downtown Athens After three years working hard as a field hand on white households' plantations near Dahlonega (now part of Savannah), Nancy married Master Thomas Watkins Jr., owner of perhaps one hundred acres northeast of downtown known then as Old plantation No. 5 Nancy free blacks worked various cotton plantations throughout Hawkins County during this time until her husband died bought back her freedom along with that of six other slaves Ohio native George Washington set out from North Carolina en route home across America aboard USS Constitution September 24th – October 1st1781 aboard HMS President under command Lt William Cushing Slaughter Captained Commander James Purdy USN These five black sailors reached Jarvis Island late summer/early fall nights before Thanksgiving1781They started fireslighting homes looking for food sourceand likely were supported by local Native Americans who aided them
