The Athens-Clarke County Airport was opened on November 10, 1931 by the United States Army Air Forces. The original airport consisted of a single runway measuring 3,000 feet in length and 100 feet wide. It was used by military aircraft until it was converted to an air force base in 1940. In 1941, the air force placed an order for three Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. The planes were delivered in 1942 and 1943. The first use of the plane at the airport came on May 7, 1943 when takeoff operations from RAF Northolt began. In 1944, the airport became operational as an American military airfield known as "Athanasia". In 1948, sovereignty of Athens-Clarke County passed from Georgia to Alabama due to statehood changes within that year. The following year saw the opening ofthe new Hawkins International Airport in neighboring Decatur County which replaced "Athanasia". With its enlarged runway and improved facilities, Hawkins soon becameAtlanta's premiere commercial airport. In 1959, a new hangar complex was built at Hawkins which served as both the airport's primary function and also served as a major training center for US Air Force Aviation units stationed in nearby Atlanta/Fulton County during World War II and subsequent conflicts.

The history of Athens, Georgia starts with its discovery by Europeans in the late 18th century. The area that now makes up Athens was first inhabited by the Creek people and later by the Cherokee. In 1795, General James Wilkinson founded a military post at what is now called Wilkinson's Landing on the Chattahoochee River, which served as a point of passage for traders and travelers between Georgia and Alabama. In 1801, Athens was founded as an agricultural town on land donated by John Marshall. It became an important transportation center due to its location at the confluence of two major rivers. By 1830, Athens had a population of over 10,000 people and was one of the largest cities in America. During the American Civil War (1861-65), Athens played a critical role in both sides of the conflict. The city was sacked twice by Confederate forces during fighting for control of Atlanta; however, it eventually emerged as one of Union forces' most successful siege lines against Rebel positions. Afterward, Athenians worked hard to rebuild their shattered cityscape and become self-sufficient again. In 1865, when Atlanta fell to Union forces following its capture by Ulysses S. Grant, local residents went into celebratory mode and began calling themselves "the last holdout". However, within a few years many businesses had closed or been relocated to new locations throughout central Georgia thanks to Plain Deal legislation passed that allowed forAtlanta's developing into an increasingly metropolitan area with strong concentrations along Decatur Street in downtown; Midtown Square; Southside Avenue;and parts of Druid Hills and Dunwoody neighborhoods east of I-285/I-85).
