Americus is a city in Georgia, United States. The population was 17,591 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Americus County. The name "Americus" comes from the Creek word Achi-kwa, meaning "place where the water flows out of a cave." The first European to visit America's present-day Georgia was Captain John Smith in 1607 and he named the region after his friend and mentor, Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson moved U.S. troops garrisoned at Fort McAllister to establish what would become Americus as a permanent American military post on Savannah's east side and named it for General Jackson himself. After years of growth and development within our small town limits, Americus officially became an incorporated city on July 1st of 2009 when it ratified its charter by vote of its citizens & City Council. America's history began with human beings who journeyed here long before any Europeans arrived! One such traveler was James Cook who sailed into Savannah Harbor in 1778 on HMS Discovery looking for new lands to explore and discovered Americas most interesting site – now known as Fort George Plantation! After landfalling, Cook set up his headquarters among local Native Americans at what is now called Musa Acuminata Shrine today’s Civic Center Park which overlooks Constitution Square located just south of downtown Americus! It wasn't until 1825 that American traders established productive tradeRelations with their counterparts from Europe during this time period; one such trader being Commodore James Kenedy! In 1829 Commodore James Kenedy chartered two vessels – Independence (now USS Constitution)and Enterprise (now USS Enterprise)to explore waterways between Asia and South America! These vessels were part of an effort by United States President John Quincy Adams to extend US jurisdiction across much of Central America through land grants to Spanish leaders! Upon reaching South America they stopped off in Curacao where they met Dutch East India Company Merchant vessel VOC ships “Insatiable”and “Nelson” under captain Philipsburg!!! This event marked the first time foreigners had ever been encountered by Native Americans living in what is now Jacksonville Florida!!! Five days later they returned home having accomplished their mission!!
