It is the main commercial and industrial center for northeastern Fulton County. The first permanent settler in what would become Americus was James Cook who founded a trading post on the Chattahoochee River in 1819. Cook's Post later became known as Americus after American Revolutionary War General George Washington's headquarters from 1776 to 1781 in nearby Dahlgren Court House on the grounds of present-day Fort Troup National Monument. By 1830, most of what would become Americus had emerged as a small community including two churches and one schoolhouse. A store and tavern were built near where US Route 73 crosses the Chattahoochee River just east of town in 1836 by John Atkinson which served as an early mercantile center for northeast Fulton County. In 1840, local resident Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 100 acres (40 ha) of land west of town from Doctor John Hilliard with intentions of developing it into a plantation empire based on cotton farming and cattle ranching but this failed due to Forrest's financial instability; his plantation failed within five years). In 1857, local resident David Levy acquired 1,000 acres (500 ha) east of town along modern US Route 123 from Doctor Denton Humphreys for $5 per acre (1 € = 5 UAH). This property formed the nucleus around which an agricultural community developed that became known as "Levytown". In 1871, Levytown was renamed Americus after United States Senator Edward Sanger who had represented Georgia in Congress during Reconstruction era.
