Americus, Georgia (sometimes called Americus County) is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 513,643. The name comes from an English settlement named Americus which was founded by General James Oglethorpe in 1785 and later became part of what is now northwest Georgia. The first permanent European settlers in America arrived in 1790 at Pee Dee Island, South Carolina, led by Doctor John Ledward Stephens. They were followed by others who came during the early 1800s including James Oglethorpe and his brother-in-law Colonel Thomas Butler Webb. Soon after American independence was declared on July 4, 1804, Americans began to settle in what is now Americus County as part of the process of creating new states within the United States. The first courthouse was built here in 1807 and it served until 1851 when a new courthouse was built near present day Alpharetta. In 1881, Americus became one of two counties united with Fulton County to form Cobb County following annexation by Atlanta into that county. In 1914, Americus received its own special law enforcement officer known as an "America's jurisdiction officer" which helped make it a more crime-free community. The post office here continued operations until 1974 when it merged with Marietta Post Office to become US Mail serviceMailboxes@americasmail dot com . In 2000, Africus made national headlines when then-Governor Sonny Perdue decided to move all government services out of downtown Atlanta and into rural areas due to budget constraints while still maintaining some city services such as water and sewer service for residents within city limits. This decision caused significant local opposition which eventually forced Perdue's resignation just five months into his term after widespread criticism from citizens living inside or adjacent to downtown Atlanta proper. One particular issue raised during this time included accusations that Mayor Kasim Reed had links to organized crime dating back several years prior while he was serving as City Manager forAtlanta; however no charges ever resulted from these claims against Reed or any other officials involved at this time
