Americanus is a small town in Peach County, Georgia. The population was 1,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Americus-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area. Americanus has been home to several businesses and residents since 1821 when it was founded as an agricultural village by John Donaldson and his brothers on the Chattahoochee River. The community grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its location on a navigable waterway connecting Chattanooga with Savannah, Alabama. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson purchased land in what would become Americanus from John Donaldson for $3,000. overgrown fields now make up much of the town's eastern edge. A year later, General Nathan Bedford Forrest established a Confederate cavalry camp here which became known as Forrest's Forts. After the war ended, many of Americaus' white farmers moved away while most African Americans remained in the community until it lost its post-war heyday in the late 1940s through increased poverty and racism within dominant white society. Today Americanus is a small farming town with few permanent residents; however, it remains an important center for local government and cultural life thanks to its status as seat of Peach County government since 1912 and its role as headquarters for two county courts (now one district court). Americanus also boasts one of only two remaining black churches in Peach County (the other being First Baptist Church) and offers educational opportunities through various parks and schools within walking distance of downtownAmericanus'.
