The history of the United States Army begins with its creation in 1775. The Continental Army was founded as a response to the British Invasion of North America and was made up of volunteers from all over the colonies. The army fought against the British for several years, but eventually lost in battle. In 1781, the Second Continental Congress created an army called the Continental Army Corps which would be responsible for defending New York City. With this new organization, the USArmy began a long march towards independence from Great Britain. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson became military governor of Tennessee and ordered his army to march on Orleans in Louisiana to attack French forces there. This action led to American victory and helped bring about independence for Louisiana and all of America. Aftermath of this battle included General Jackson being given command of all U.S Armies by President James K Polk. By 1800, there were around 140,000 soldiers in the United StatesArmy! However, during periods such as Reconstruction following World War II (1946-1949), this number increased greatly due to draftsmanship into various branches of service throughout society (e.g., Marines, Air Force). As recently as 1990, there were over 550 active duty soldier units across 21 states within The National Guard; making it one of most militarized societies on Earth!

Americus was founded in 1802 by George Washington and his family as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1811, the post became an American military base during the Creek War. In 1815, Americus became a stop on the Underground Railroad to freedom for fugitive slaves. The town was incorporated as a city in 1907 and grew rapidly until it had a population of over 100,000 by 1930. It lost its status as a city after World War II when suburban development increased its population by 50%. After 1995, Americus experienced significant decline due to economic stagnation and crime rates which have since stabilized. Americus is located at (33.560939,-87.55849). Its elevation is 191 feet (57 m). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 5,868 people residing inAmericus proper (the unincorporated community adjacent to downtown), 1,651 households and 1,468 families residing within Troup County including 3 villages: Perimeter Village 2 miles east of downtown Americus on US-279; Center Village 9 miles north on I-20; and Westside Village 11 miles south on Interstate 95W/I- Alphonso Jones Road Wards 4 & 7 are all within Troup County boundaries but not part of Amercuskan limits
