The unit was first modeled after the Georgia National Guard and it is said that the original name of the unit came from a plan that proposed having a single battalion of guardsmen march to the sound of bagpipes to celebrate America's independence from Great Britain.
Alpharetta is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 46,898 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Georgia and the largest city east of the Appalachians. The city's nickname is "The Athens of the South" because of its location on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Apostle Baptist Church, one of Atlanta's earliest African American denominations, was founded in Alpharetta by Rev. James Meeks in 1892. Meeks' parents were slaves who had been sold to Driscoll Brothers plantation near Decaturville, Alabama. After his death in 1872, Apostle Baptist Church (now First Presbyterian) became the church for Africans in Alpharetta until it closed its doors permanently in 1961 amid protests from local white Baptists over segregation policies). In 1967, First Baptist organized a Africana congregation and renamed itself "First Presbyterian/Apostle Baptist". In 1898 cotton fields and other commercial interests adjoining what are now University Avenue and Roswell Road were bought by J.C. Penney; Penney named his new development "Alpharetta". He began construction on what would become one of Atlanta's most visible landmarks: One hundred years after he founded Peachtree Mall—the first enclosed shopping mall outside of London—JCPenney opened his first store there on November 15th 1904 with an audience including Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson as well as King George V and Queen Elizabeth II The growth of Alpharetta was initially slow due to its distance from downtown Atlanta; however with help from Interstate 20 (and subsequent expansions), Interstate 285 (now US-285), MARTA rail service into town from nearby Cobb County,[5] Asante Homes developments along University Avenue[6][7] and new corporate headquarters buildings such as Ponce de Leon Plaza,[8][9][10] growth continued rapidly throughout much of the 1990s despite some initial community opposition to suburban sprawl.[11][12][13] In 2000 Census figures show that when compared to neighboring DeKalb County,[14] Alpharetta had increased its population by more than fifty percent since 1990 while DeKalb has declined by more than thirty percent since then;[15] this trend is expected to continue into 2020.[16][17] By 2018 there were over 50 thousand residents living within a two miles radius of downtown streetscape while only 10%of alleloctons lived within five miles radius
The National Guard has been a part of the United States for over one hundred years. One of the earliest times that national guard troops were used in defense was during the American Civil War. The 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, an all-volunteer regiment, served in General Robert E. Lee’s army from 1861 to 1865. During the war, many states had their own forces and each state had its own commander. In 1863, Congress passed the National Guard Bureau Act which created a national guard organization for each state in America. This act gave military commanders authority to call up Guardsmen to serve as guardsmen in their stateside units when necessary. The National Guard also received funding and training under the Union Army while they were fighting against Confederate soldiers. When the American Civil War ended, many men who had served in the National Guard were discharged or resigned because they no longer wanted to fight for a country that was going through such turmoil. However, others decided to stay on and fight another day. Many men who had served with distinction during the Civil War became officers in the Ulysses S Grant’s army during Reconstruction Era (1870-1913). After Reconstruction ended, many of these same veterans decided to retire from service or become employees of their respective states’ governments instead of returning back into active duty with their old unit(s). In World War II, most members of Congress who were not home during wartime opted for civilian life instead; however, some members did enlist in the armies or navy as part of patriotic duty (such as Representative John Wirtheimer)). Once hostilities ceased nationally, most members returned home but there remained a small number enlisted within local militias throughout America until 1949 when federal law changed eligibility requirements so that any citizen could join any reserve force outlet regardless of whether he/she lived within reach (). The city of Alpharetta, Georgia was founded on February 17, 1887 by John Waddell and James E. Cobb. The area that nowincludes Alpharetta was originally a part of the Cherokee Nation. After the American Revolution, the Cherokee Nation was divided into two parts-the Creek Nation and the Cherokee proper. On December 14, 1868, after four days of voting, the Creek Nation voted to secede from the United States and form their own nation called the Confederate Republic of Georgia. The following year, on January 3rd, 1869- just one day after President Andrew Johnson announced his intention to re-open negotiations with Japan over boundary issues in Korea- General William Troup led a force of 5500 men across the Chattahoochee River into eastern Alabama to attack Fort Gibson which had been garrisoned by American forces under Ulysses S. Grant. This event is commonly known as “The Battle of Atlanta” and it helped lead to Grant being named Commander in Chief for all US forces in Chattanooga at this time.
