Alpharetta is a city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,434 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Cobb County by population. Alpharetta is named after an Englishman who settled there in 1831 and named the community "Alpharetta". The first postoffice was established in 1835. In 1838, a sawmill was built on Southside Creek by James Witherspoon and others and became known as "Witherspoon's Mill." One of Alpharetta's most famous residents was Methodist minister John Fenton who served from 1865 to 1870 and whose home still stands today on Northside Drive near downtown. The first store in town opened its doors on December 8, 1837. The retail sector continued to grow rapidly throughout the late 19th century with many new businesses opening up including a Ladies' Clothing Store (1875), a bakery (1879), a grocery store (1885), an insurance company (1907), two restaurants (1920–1921) as well as several other small businesses until it all disappeared during World War II due to shortages of wartime materials. In 1941, when war began, Alpharetta lost its main downtown business district which left it largely unoccupied for months on end while stores were requisitioned for military use or bombed during the war effort. However, adjacent northside neighborhoods such as Dunston and Roswell quickly regained their pre-war vitality thanks to their large numbers of newly built homes that were available for occupancy immediately following the war. After more than 50 years of growth and development - one that has seen much change both inside and outside of the city limits - Alpharetta now boasts over 27,000 residents making it one of the most populous cities in Cobb County by far with plans underway to annex additional territory around Gwinnett county beginning in 2019
