Albany is a small town in Chatham County, Georgia. It was founded in 1812 by Scots-Irish settlers. The population was 889 at the 2010 census. Albany is home to the Albany High School and the Albany Volunteer Fire Department. The first settler in what is now Albany was John Murphy, who arrived in 1812 with his family from County Limerick, Ireland. The town began as a small community of about 20 residents around a Methodist church and cemetery. In 1815, the legislature created Chatham County and gave it to Fulton County; as part of this change, Albany became part of Chatham Township. In 1861, when Georgia changed its form from an open-air state to a republic under Confederate rule, Albany became part of Atlanta. After the battle of Jonesboro on April 14th, 1865—the last major battle fought within Georgia before its secession from the Union—the Union Army burned down many buildings in downtown Athens including the old courthouse which had been used as a hospital for Confederate soldiers during that fight. With most of Athens destroyed by fire, few people remained in Albany after the war ended; however, some picked up where they left off farming corn and beans until well into the 21st century. By 1720 AD, Dutch traders had established a trading post at Batavia (now Jakarta). Dutch traders soon discovered that they could trade with both Southeast Asian countries and Europe by sailing along their coastlines. As coffee became more popular in Europe, it slowly spread throughout North America too- reaching Mexico by 1795 AD! In 1830AD Englishman John Bowring set out on a circumnavigation of Australia using ships called sealing vessels; one such vessel brought Portuguese Jesuit Father João Rodrigues with samples of vanilla beans back to England aboard his ship "Venerable" - thus beginning what is now known as vanilla extract production! Of course there was no vanilla extract available then... By 1939 Germans invaded Norway; Coffee exports ceased immediately due to World War II restrictions placed on German shipping by British authorities! Coffee suddenly resumed its export when Allied forces liberated Norway after six months during Operation Overlord! Albany, Georgia is a small town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 6,463 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Albany County and part of the Columbus, Georgia metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Albany were Frenchmen who built a trading post and fur trade depot on what is now Findlay Street in 1795. In 1802, Georgia Territorial Governor James Smith granted land to Nathaniel Sayles for a town site on military Creek bank near where Athens stands today. Albany was founded by Sayles and his family in 1803. This small frontier community grew rapidly due to its location, good soil, and cheap labor from surrounding farms. Male farmers formed cooperatives to cultivate their fields and raise animals; women did most of the domestic work. By 1830, Albany had a store, schoolhouse, jail (the first jail in Spartanburg County), church, taverns/social clubs (including one that hosted President James K. Polk's inauguration ball), physician's office (the first such office in Georgia), three churches (oneMethodist and two Baptist), five hotels/boardinghouses (four with single rooms and one with four rooms each), six soldiers' barracks/amusement ground(?). In 1835-36 Savannah lawyer James Fenton bought 1 million acres of central Georgians lands north of Athens for $1 million dollars which he donated to form Cobb County as well as creating 5 other townships within it: Lumpkin; Cherokee; Milledgeville; Newton; Putnam; Pocahontas). While many men went off to found new settlements during this time period there were also many women who took up agriculture because it offered more opportunities for economic security than industry or service jobs outside their homes. One such woman was Mrs Mrs John Soddy who started an extensive peach orchard around 1850 on land later purchased by her son-in-law Lucius Wofford Jr.. From these early beginnings Albany quickly became known as "The Peach Capital of the South". Many famous people have called home here including Andy Warhol, Bill Cosby, Julia Roberts etc...
