The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Albany, Georgia has been a part of the community for over 60 years. The Auxiliary was established on November 5, 1916 when six local men banded together to form a volunteer organization to help protect the coast. Today, the Auxiliary member body includes more than 350 individuals who provide support and assistance to local coastal communities. Albany, Georgia is a city in north-central Georgia. The population was 5,552 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Albany County. The original Cherokee town of Alba was established on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River in central Georgia about 1814 by Colonel James Robertson and his brother Alexander Robertson. The community developed into a small town before it became Albany in 1836 when General Andrew Johnson ordered its incorporation as a county. In 1889, Albany County was created from portions of Fulton and Union counties, making it one of only two counties in Georgia without a congressional district. Albany is located at (33.519872). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. As of 2000, there were 4,751 people living in Albany City proper and 3,972 people living in unincorporated areas adjacent to or within Albany City limits. As of 2010, 1% of Fulton's population resided within Albany City limits while 99% resides outside its borders; this difference is slightly more pronounced for rural areas located just inside orjust outsidecity limits – 96% reside outsideof them (Table 1). The racial makeup for Albany City proper according to 2000 census data included 2% African American residents and 98% white residents (Table 2). However by 2010 demographics these figures had changed: black residents made up 0.3% of all residents while Hispanic residents constituted 9%. 3%, or less than 1 out 10th percentile among Fultonians aged 25 years and over who identified themselves as black or Latino were Asian Americans; they made up 11%. Notable changes since 1990 include an increase in Italian Americans with 7%, increasing representation for Hispanics including Asians (12%) as well as whites (8%) but no change whatsoever for African Americans (Table 2)

Afterward, Albany experienced significant decline as a result of economic factors and white flight. By 1990, Albany had a population of just 50 people living within its walls alone. However, recent revitalization efforts have begun to reverse these trends and Albany is now enjoying renewed popularity as an educational and cultural center for Fulton County.
