The Albany, Georgia Air Force deployed gift history in 1957. The gift history was created by the Lieutenant Colonel John Gentry and First Lieutenant Ozzie Witherspoon. The lieutenant colonel took charge of the deployment as Commanding Officer. He recruited 10 men who were to serve for 3 years and then return home. The air force flew two C-47s to Savannah, Georgia with $1,000 worth of gifts for civilians in town. They also flew a planeload of presents to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., which was their first visit there. This trip marked the beginning of the air force’s relationship with Walter Reed and helped make it one of the most influential medical organizations in America. After their stay at Walter Reed, the 10 men boarded a plane back home on December 6th, 1957 bound for Athens, Georgia where they would deliver presents to local children and spread Christmas cheer through festivities like tree-lighting and caroling. On December 14th they returned to Albany Municipal Airport where they unloaded their gifts onto runway 11L before taking off again on their 2nd year mission: flyingChristmas present packages from Albany all the way down south to Mobile, Alabama!
