The Acworth National Guard was organized in 1938. The unit became known as the 1st Battalion, Acworth National Guard. In 1941, the 1st Battalion was redesignated as the 2nd Battalion, Acworth National Guard and served in World War II. In 1949, the 2nd Battalion was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, Acworth National Guard and served in the Vietnam War. In 1968, the 3rd Battalion became part of the Georgia Army National Guard and saw combat in Operation 70th Meridian. Since its inception, theAcworth National Guard has played an important role in our state’s history. It has been proud to protect our citizens and serve our country during periods of peace and war.

Acworth was first settled by Georgians in 1839 and incorporated as a town on April 14, 1867. The Acworth Amusement Park was built in 1907 on an 8-acre (3 ha) tract of land that had been deeded to the town by General James Moseley Johnston. The park included a water park and two amusement arcades. In 1951, Acworth became one of five towns in Fulton County to become members of the "National City Improvement District". In 1970, Acworth voters passed a resolution recognizing International Women's Day and proclaiming it "Equal Rights Day". On October 15th of that year, Mayor Vernon Pittman announced that women would be allowed to vote for the first time in Acworth history. This began what has been called "the era of woman power" within the townspeople; many women served as elected officials until after World War II when voting restrictions were enacted again following Reconstruction. In 1984, voter approval helped pass a referendum authorizing cityhood for Acworth; this decision marked the beginning of an ongoing process which culminated with incorporation into Atlanta on July 2nd of that year.
