It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Acworth was John Cline who arrived in 1802. In 1814, Major General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Jonesboro to Acworth to assist in recruiting for the Union army during the American Civil War. The town was named after Captain Nathaniel Acworth who fought with General Jackson's regiment in that conflict. The community made headlines when it became known as "The Lighthouse Capital of America" because it had five lighthouses during its heyday as a port city (19th century). In 1907, a company of ladies formed an all-female Temperance Society and named their society "Acrement Ladies." They built a convent on William Howell Drive and continued to operate it until 1928 when they sold it to Reverend Wanda Meeks Halloran who renamed it Stonewall House after her paramour, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. Rev. King eventually moved out of Acrement Ladies into his own home there and continueed operation as an independent religious institution until he was assassinated by shots fired from an assassin's rifle outside Ebenezer Baptist Church on April 4, 1968. In 1986, Stone Mountain Broadcasting Company merged with Time Warner Incorporated forming Turner Broadcasting System which later became CNN Worldwide Limited Partnership upon Turner Broadcasting System's acquisition by Time Warner Corporation on August 29, 1995 CNN Worldwide Limited Partnership operates CNN International including its news services bureaux around the world; Telemundo Network USA; AEW Television Networks (4 networks); HLN television network; TNT cable network; TBS network; and WE tv channel . The Acworth community is located in McIntosh County, Georgia, about 20 miles east of Atlanta. The Acworth post office was established on October 1, 1876. The Acworth town site was laid out in 1878 by the firm of Gilmore and White. The first settler in this area was John Wilkinson. Mr. Wilkinson started a small sawmill around 1879 and soon realized that he needed more land to grow crops and build homes. He sold his land to the Pritchard family in 1883 for $35 per acre. In 1895, Jno A.Pritchard organized the Gwinnett County Agricultural Society which purchased 640 acres of forested land east of Acworth for development into agricultural lands. This enabled the citizens of Acworth to build their own homes without depending on outside assistance or donations from people living elsewhere in McIntosh County or within Gwinnett County itself. In 1905, acorn production began in Acworth with the arrival of Jno & wife Carrie Pritchard from Decatur, Alabama with their son Johnnie (John). With help from her husband and father-in-law Jno's brother-in-law Gussie Lovie (Gus), Carrie started a small corn mill on what is now known as "the Pritchards' Corner". From there she continued to produce corn until it became an national commodity during World War I when efforts were made to ban exports because of prices being too high abroad due to war supplies disruptions at home! After the war ended, Mrs. Pritchard owned her property outright but continued operations as a feedlot until 1949 when it closed down due to poor health conditions; however, some artifacts survive today from that time period including evidence that they raised chickens there! Today much remains unchanged about those early days such as John Wilkinson's two mills producing lumber for local builders and farmers all while providing employment opportunities for more than 100 people right here at "The Crossroads" today!
On December 17, 1837, Acworth was incorporated as a town in the Georgia General Assembly. It was named for General James Oglethorpe, who had fought in the War of 1812 and Creek Indian Wars. The first post office was established in Acworth on January 1, 1838. The town center was built in the early 1840s and it served as the county seat from 1845 to 1870. In 1870, Acworth became an independent city and remained so until 1957. In 1907, Acworth voters approved a $5 million bond issue to build a new police department and fire department. The city continued to grow rapidly thereafter with population rates reaching over 100,000 by 1939. On May 25 of that year, Mayor Waddell announced that the city would be annexing neighboring towns of Dunwoody and Kennesaw because they were experiencing growth too slow for Acworth's own development. The annexation process took two years and ended up resulting in the creation of Auburndale Township which minus its downtown core became part of Acworth again on November 1, 1941.
