Acworth is a small town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,496 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Augusta metropolitan area. The Acworth Independent School District serves areas within Acworth and outside of it. The first people to live in what is now Acworth were Native American slaves who worked on the farmsteads of General James Oglethorpe and his wife Elizabeth. The first settler in what became Acworth was John Barclay, who arrived in 1812 from England with his family. In 1837, Isaac Asbury founded the Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church which remains an important part of the community today. In 1865, John Fenton bought 6 acres (2 hectares) of land northeast of present-day Acworth and named it "Fenton's Land". He developed it into a farming community that included gristmill, sawmill, post office and railroad station. He died in 1897 and is buried at Green Gables Cemetery (). In 1892 George Washington Carver settled nearpresent-dayAcworth with his family after purchasing 640 acres (250 hectares) of rolling farmland east of downtown Atlanta for $1 million (). Acworth is a town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Acworth post office was established on December 13, 1892, and served until it was discontinued in 1907. A railroad station called "Acre" was built here in 1893 by the Atlanta and Chattanooga Railway. In 1906, Acworth became one of six towns in Clarke County to be organized as an unincorporated community under the name of "Acworth." The first mayor of this community was James Matson Jr.. In 1909, Wm. Henson opened a grocery store and poultry market here which remain active to this day. In 1917, Acworth also became home to one of the first schools in Clarke County when Drury Academy (now known as Watkinsville) moved from Decatur to Acworth for educational purposes. After World War I ended, most businesses closed down due to difficult economic times and few people resided in Acworth during its heyday; however, there are still several buildings standing today including the historic First Baptist Church which serves as a museum today and the Post Office building which has been used by both the school district and various other organizations over the years including a bank and two clinics before becoming vacant again in 2009.
