Acworth, Georgia is a town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first Europeans to come to Acworth were those who came overland from North Carolina in 1699 and 1701. They named their new settlement "Bishop's Landing," after George Washington's brother-in-law, Bishop Alexander Dowling of UNC Chapel Hill. In 1802, General James K. Polk traveled through DeKalb County and stopped at Bishop's Landing on his way north to take command of the Army during the Creek War. He recommended that Acworth be named for him as a tribute to his dead friend and ally. As a result of this recommendation, Acworth was renamed for General Polk in 1802. In 1819–20 Captain John Fenton built a logging road between here and Milledgeville which became known as Fenton's Trace (later called State Route 30). This contributed greatly to the growth of Acworth during its early years but also caused some problems because it interfered with trade between Milledgeville and Atlanta proper. In 1825 an ordinance was passed by the Georgia legislature authorizing building of stores within one mile (1 km) of every public house in the county free from duty by members thereof; this measure led to increased business along Fenton's Trace so much so that by 1830 there were six stores open each day in Acworth alone! During Reconstruction Periods (1865-1877), Acworth experienced rapid growth due primarily to instilling agricultural values into local citizens' minds following recovery from slavery following American Civil War (1861-1865). A large cotton gin & distillery were constructed here in 1865; these marked an important turning point for this community as it soon became one of the leading producers of cottonseed oil nationally throughout Reconstruction periods despite having no river access or other natural resources suited thereto! In 1881 when railroad service reached Acworth via Marietta - then spelled "Marianeta" - merchants began buying trainsloads of goods direct from Marietta instead long distance shipping services thereby sparing them paying duties on items delivered directly by railroads! This opportunity created many jobs for both men & women alike who ran small businesses serving passengers aboard passenger cars while also manufacturing products such as clothinglines & radios!
