The mill closed down in 1922 but reopened as the Butler Shoe Factory located on Courthouse Hill west of downtown Acworth with production continuing until 1985 when it closed again due to lack of demand from the general public. The first thing that made Acworth stand out from other small villages or towns throughout Georgia was its location within easy reach of Atlanta proper by railroads and roads (the Coffee Mill Railroad ran through town). This connection robbed small communities like those near Cobb County of their main business district and/or transportation outlet; however, this did not happen with Acworth because its founders decided early on that this would be their primary focus—educating their citizens so they could become self-sufficient farmers and businessmen instead of dependent upon outside sources for their livelihoods.
