The first permanent settler in Winter Haven was James Peele of Georgia in 1827. After his death, his family took over a cabin near present-day downtown Winter Haven and made their home there for several years before moving out to take up land east of town along SR A1A. In 1829, John Frye began building a log cabin on what is now North Main Street (now US 1) just south of Center Avenue. By 1840, most of what is now Downtown Winter Haven had been built with a few dozen homes scattered around Pioneer Square off Church Street between First Street and Fourth Street NW; some evidence suggests that these homes were actually built by Polish settlers who had come overland through Canada during the 1840s when travel conditions were better than they are today because then there was no railroads into Florida.
