In the early 1920s, Winter Haven was a small town in Florida. It had a population of only 1,500 people and there were no gunslingers or gun dealers. However, Winter Haven quickly became known as the Gun Mecca of the South for its strong demand for firearms. In fact, one of the first shooters to arrive in Winter Haven was Johnnie Applegate. He joined the military in World War I and then returned home to open his own shooting gallery. After he died, his business passed down to his son Johnnie Jr. and grandson Johnnie III. The Applegate dynasty continued to run their business until around 1990 when it closed down due to falling sales prices and increasing competition from other businesses in the area. Today,Winter Haven is home to severalgun stores that sell firearms including American Guns & Ammo, which has been located here since 1978; Arctic Arms Custom Shop which opened in 1984; Guntech USA which opened in 1992; Simply Joe's Shooting Gallery whichopened in 1995; and The Pistol Place Store which opened in 2007. Additionally, many residents still maintain their own shooting galleries or storage facilities within the city limits- such as Bluegrass Firearms & Ammunition warehouse on Old US Hwy 421 near FM 965 (pictured above). Some notable shooters who have resided or worked here over the years include Ted Nugent (the father of country music), Jimmy Buffet (the singer/guitarist for Fleetwood Mac), Bill Paxton (the actor/director who starred in Jeep Liberty), Gia Maggiore (The Sopranos’ Gina) and more!

Winter Haven is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County and home to the University of South Florida. Winter Haven is located on the Gulf Coast on Clearwater Bay, which has been known for its pearl oyster production since prehistoric times. The first permanent residents of Winter Haven were two brothers, Will and Sam Snow, who arrived in 1827 from Maryland. They built a log cabin on what is now Snow Avenue and Log Rd., near present-day State Road 441A (US 41). The Snows originally used hogs for their meat and hides but soon realized that this practice did not produce enough meat to support a family so they switched to growing crops. In 1830, Sam married Anna Fenton and settled down in what is now downtown Winter Haven with his new wife and four children: Samuel (1831–1902), John (1833–1900), James (1835–1901), and Anna Belle (baptized December 5, 1838). Anna Fenton's brother Andrew Sowers also lived in Winter Haven during this time. shortly after he became sheriff of Polk County; he had several stores thereabouts as well as housing for deputies or "sheriffs' homes". In 1839 John Snows died suddenly while out hunting deer in nearby Alachua National Forest southwest of town; his son Samuel inherited assets totaling $829 cash-and-carry goods store inventory worth $1 million at the time when he passed away eighty years later at age ninety-six. With only one initial store open due to prohibitionist sentiments prevailing then against such activities being carried out within town limits -Samuel's enterprise would continue to thrive until prohibition was repealed three decades later -John Snows' legacy lives on today as one ofWinter Haven's longest running businesses extant! An early settler was George Dickey who arrived about 1840 with his family from Ireland via New York City – making him one of the earliest Anglo Americans resident hereabouts! He built a house on current day Court Street/Cassell Drive near where US 1 crosses over into state road 441A today – marking perhaps our earliest physical evidence indicative of settlement activity hereabouts including items like pottery shards found nearby dating back over 100 years old! For many years some have erroneously believed this particular location may be considered episode number 2 Genesis: that any physical evidence remaining from said event might be responsible for initiating ice cream production & retailing along SR 441A immediately following – though little if any concrete evidence exists whatsoever asserting such an assertion beyond reasonable doubt!
