In 1949, Winter Haven was incorporated into Orlando County and became part of that county’s economy. The first real sign of change came when General Electric established its corporate headquarters here in 1954. That company has been headquartered here ever since. Today,Winter Haven is home to both the United States Marine Corps Aviation Test Wing and United States Coast Guard Station Jacksonville. Moody founded the First Universalist Church of Winter Haven with his wife and children as missionaries to help spread Christianity in the area that now includes Pinellas County and parts of Hillsborough County. In 1888 Moody and his family were removed from office after refusing to endorse a presidential candidate who was then running against Grover Cleveland for president. In 1901 Anna Kapp introduced her new ice cream business to town after finding undeveloped land near her home for it on Valentine's Day 1901 when she took delivery of two buseshels of churned ice cream from Philadelphia Jenney & Sons which she named Anna's Chocolate Factory after her mother (Anna Kapp). The first batch sold out within five minutes and Anna started selling two boxes per day for $1 each plus shipping charges! She continued marketing this product until 1905 when an entrepreneur by the name of Harry Finch bought her business and changed its name to Harry's candy store where he operated it into the 1920s before moving it down USHwy 1A into what is now Winter Park/Orlando

In 1984, Winter Haven won the title of "City of Progress" from Orlando City Stadium's expansion into downtown that year. That year also saw the installation of new streetscape and light fixtures as well as a new water system with reverse osmosis technology to reduce Wastewater Discharge. The city has since been awarded several national awards for excellence in planning and engineering including being named one of America’s “Best Cities for Businesses” by Forbes magazine in 2009 and2010 . Winter Haven was founded in 1892 by J. Winthrop Gilmore and the town's first post office opened in 1893. The name of the town was changed to Winter Haven in 1896, after a severe cold winter. The first shopping center opened in 1978. In 1990, the city annexed neighboring Marengo Beach and became a municipally-owned community through an agreement between City Hall and the Marengo Beach Chamber of Commerce.
