The program continued to grow, and in 1992, the Department of Defense announced that it would allocate an additional $2 million for the gift history program. This was followed by 2006 donations from Sergeant First Class Joshua Purdy and Specialist Third Class Nicholas Wojcik in 2009 and 2010, respectively. In 2012, Corporal Aubrey Sawaya gave a new machine gun to Marine Major General James Conway while he was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The following year saw another donation from Sergeant First Class Adam Potts when he served as an escort dog handler for Master Sergeant Christopher Barger on his deployment to Afghanistan. And lastly, Lance Corporal Thomas White gave a brand new M1A1 Carbine rifle to Captain John Kostas during his deployment to Afghanistan in 2013. Winter Haven is named after a Winnie-the-Pooh storybook character who lives in the community. The first Europeans to visit Winter Haven were Spanish explorers on their way from Cuba to Mexico City in 1539. They built Fort San Marcos as a trading post on an island near what is now downtown Winter Haven and called it Isla Verde because there was no land for them to find here. When Spain lost its colonies in North America during the American Revolution, they took over Winter Haven as their new outpost and renamed it Santiago de Cuba for themselves. Afterward, Ft San Marcos reverted back to its original name when the US annexed Florida in 1821. During World War II, many Floridians chose to serve in the military because of wartime shortages of food and housing In fact, one out of every five people in Duval County served in some capacity during World War II – more than any other county anywhere in Florida! More than 1 million Americans served overseas including 2,500 citizens from Winter Haven! Some of our WWII veterans are still living and working today!

In 1886, it became part of Palm Beach County and was named after New York City's Winterset section of town where wealthy German-Americans had established themselves. The name change came about because many of these early settlers were winter visitors who brought their families with them when they moved to Florida during winter months. By 1902, most of what would become Today's Winter Haven had been developed and incorporated into what is now known as City Hall Square
