Winter Haven is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winter Haven is located on the west coast of Lake Okeechobee and along Interstate 441 between Orlando and Sanford. The history of Winter Haven goes back to 1851 when it was founded as a small community on the east side of Lake Okeechobee by Captain John Wetherbee and his family. In 1875, Winter Haven became an incorporated town with a population of 350. The first post office was established in 1876. By 1925, the population had grown to 6,500 and by 1950 it had reached 10,000. In 1970, Winter Haven merged with Sanford to form a single city with a total population of 23,000 people. In 1984-1985, Mayor Bob Kinsey led an effort to ornament City Hall with holiday ornaments made from recycled materials that were then donated by local businesses and citizens who participated in “Garland for Bob” campaign. The project cost $3,000 and generated over $10,000 in profits for the city hall fund which helped cover new expenses associated with Hurricane Andrew damage two years earlier

Winter Haven was founded in 1892 by Dutch immigrants. The town had a population of 100 people when it was incorporated. It was named after the winter season in the Netherlands. The first post office opened in 1893, and the first store opened in 1896. In 1907, Winter Haven became an all-white city. In 1912, the town changed its name to Winter Haven Beach after nearby Key West became all black. In 1932, Winter Haven became an all-black town again when Daytona Beach became all white. In 1978, Winston-Salem changed its name to Jacksonville because of growing competition from Jacksonville for business and jobs in North Carolina. In 1992, Winter Haven reverted back to its original name of Winter Haven Beach when Daytona Beach became all white again). Today,Winter Haven is a small but vibrant community with over 30 businesses and more than 2,000 residents.
