The Winter Haven Army National Guard Unit (WHAUG) has a rich history dating back to World War II. The unit was organized on December 1, 1942, and activated on February 3, 1943. The unit fought in both World Wars and the Korean War. In peacetime, the WAUG is an active duty infantry regiment with three battalions- one each from Fort Myers Beach (FL), Daytona Beach (FL), and Melbourne (FL). During World War II, the WAUG enlisted men from all over Florida. In 1945, however, the military closed down Broward County’s army program due to budget cuts. However, not everyone within the county lost their ability to join up; some people still managed to enlist in other armies or militias during WWII. At that time there were no conscription laws in Florida so many men simply chose to serve in the WAUG regardless of whether they wanted to fight or not. After the war ended many of these veterans decided they would like to stay home and have their children grow up without seeing combat. However, others decided they would like a chance at another career after spending years out of work training soldiers for war. So instead of disbanding or selling their units back into civilian hands as happened during WWI or WWII,Army officials decided that this particular military should be kept alive as an option for future service members who may want it but don’t feel drawn towards service based upon family obligations or financial reasons alone. In 1955 two additional battalions were added- one from Miami Beach and one from Ft Myers Beach- making it four battalions total serving within Winter Haven since 1942! As part of Army policy at that time any inactive volunteer soldier could be reactivated by order of senior leadership if needed again wartime sentiment arose among some members onceactivation became possible again! This policy created stability within our battalion through activation/deactivation status which allowed our commanders more latitude when planning units/units operations while being able to manage manpower efficiently while maintaining cohesion within our unit due its long history together! Winter Haven is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,562 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Duval County and the largest municipality in its county. The city was founded on December 12, 1893 as Winter Haven Beach by J.P. Morgan and Wm. Dickey and named for his wife's native country of Nova Scotia. The name "Winter Haven" originated from a description of this area by Captain James Cook when he visited Florida in 1768: "Inhabitants are chiefly French Canadians who have come down to this part of America during the winter." The original downtown core developed around what is now City Hall Park and State Street between 1892 and 1912; it included such businesses as the Biltmore Hotel (1893), Morgan's grocery store (1894), Wm. Dickey's ice cream parlor (1895-1901), and J.P.'s barber shop (1902). A two-story bank building built in 1909 served as both local courthouse and jail until 1964; it has been used as an apartment complex since then. Winter Haven is a city located in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name Winter Haven comes from an early winter weather advisory that was issued on December 12, 1892 byumbered "XVIII". The advisory warned residents of a severe cold front that would originate in Georgia and travel down the East Coast before reaching Florida. The first post office in Winter Haven was established on December 12, 1893. The town was named for General James A. Winter who had served as Superintendent of Schools for Duval County from 1887 to 1893. In 1907, the name of the city changed to what it has now known as. On November 8, 1959, Winter Haven became one of sixteen cities within the new Palm Beach County Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As part of this MSA changeover process, Duval and Hendry counties were combined into Palm Beach County and all municipalities therein were absorbed into the new county including Winter Haven. On October 15th 2018 Hurricane Irma impacted parts of western Broward County making it necessary for all government offices within City limits to move to nearby Fort Lauderdalezon

In 1916, construction began on the first winter sports complex in Florida, which would later be called the Winter Haven Stadium. In 1924, the city annexed neighboring Gainesville and renamed itself after Winter Haven’s mayor, HUGHES VALLEY CITY (now part of Jacksonville). The city experienced rapid growth during World War II when USAAF military airfields were built in nearby Hillsborough County.
