Winter Haven is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,582 at the 2010 census. It lies adjacent to Lakeland on the Gulf of Mexico about 15 miles (24 km) south of Gainesville and 30 miles (48 km) north of Tampa. The town was founded in 1881 by settlers from Georgia and is named after Governor James K. Polk's Winter Haven Plantation. It became a census-designated place in 1964 and has since grown rapidly with the influx of retirees from surrounding counties during the late 1960s and 1970s. Winter Haven is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1892 by J.P. Morgan and his brother John Davenport as a station on the Miami Railroad. In 1905, Winter Haven became an incorporated town with a population of 712. The first post office opened in 1916 and was called "Hollywood." In 1925, it became "Winter Haven". In 1931, the name of the city was changed to "Winter Haven", after Mayor James Fenton's wife and namesake Winifred Averill Frost delivered a speech in which she said: "I am glad to be given this opportunity to speak about our wonderful City of Winter Haven ... I deeply appreciate your willingness to take me here for this important occasion." Winifred Averill Frost served as mayor from 1931 until her death in 1944; during her time as mayor, Winter Haven reached its peak growth with an increase from 12,000 residents to 20,591 residents within five years (1931-1945). She also spearheaded efforts such as developing new parks and playgrounds within the city limits along with increasing funding for public education opportunities throughout the community; these advancements are still visible today through various programs such as SummerStage and WINTER HAVEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE. After Winifred Averill Frost's death, Robert Pritchard took over as mayor until he was elected governor in 1959. He then served two terms before retiring effective December 3rd of that year due to termlimits set by then-Governor Lawton Chiles. On January 6th of 1960 Governor Chiles appointed Asa Hutchinson to succeed him as mayor effective February 14th following Hutchinson's successful run for lieutenant governor against incumbent Republican Norm Coleman who had been picked up by then-Governor Chiles temporarily while he prepared to run for re-election later that year under no specific plans or goals beyond winning another term without any restrictions or limitations set by law at that time other than serving two full terms consecutively without any break between them like most governors were limited to one term maximum per four years when they were first elected but since then have been able to serve three consecutive four year terms with no break) less than six months after being elected lieutenant governor making him Florida’s youngest U.S. Senator having only been sworn into office on January 5th following his victory over Coleman becoming just one day shy of reaching fifty years old on November 25th celebrating his fiftieth anniversary currently sitting out more than half his original term already having announced he will not seek reelection in 2020 which would make him ninety nine years old if he did so now
Winter Haven was founded in 1881 by the Winter Haven Railroad. The railroad built a depot and tracks south of town and started to bring goods to the town from plantations near Fort Walton Beach. The first store opened in 1882, and the first post office opened in 1886. In 1902, the town began to get its own water supply from an irrigation system. In 1909, Winter Haven became part of St. Petersburg County and changed its name to Winter Haven Beach.
