The history of the United States Air Force deployment gift to Winter Haven, Florida dates back to World War II. During that time, the United States Air Force was established as a part of the American military. The first airmen stationed in Winter Haven were employees of the Radio Corporation of America who worked at Miamisburg Army Base. In 1946, when the base was closed down, the Air Force took over its functions and moved into what is now known as Wright-Patterson AFB. Over the years, there have been numerous deployments by both U.S. and foreign militaries throughout Northeast Florida. However, it is during this time that Winter Haven comes to prominence as one of USAF’s most recent installations. In early December 2006, members of Squadron Vought-Higgins (C/O Doug Hager) flew a T-6 Texan Talon jet trainer from Maxwell AFB in Alabama to Daytona Beach for an appearance at the National Guard Armory for Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony attended by Governor Jeb Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. The visit was documented on video and later became famous due to its inclusion in an episode of “Airwolf” which aired in January 2007. As part of their participation in “Airwolf” Season 3 Episode 8th entitled: Airmen On Duty –Christmas Tree Lighting”, UAS squadron Vought-Higgins lit up a Christmas tree outside Of Tampa Municipal Airport while accompanying local fighter jets participating in Northern Light Bomber Wing exercisesimulated combat against simulated enemy fighters flown by Lt Col Jeffrey Smith (UAS pilot). Since then, many more USAF personnel have deployed toWinter Haven including Lieutenant General Michael J Hogan who served as Commander USNORTHCOM Region IV from September 2009 until his retirement on May 12th 2010; Colonel John Potter who served as Commander 1st Bombardment Wing at Fort Everglades until his retirement on July 28th 2009; Major General Timothy Keogh who served as Commanding Officer 2nd Bombardment Wing at Eglin AFB until his retirement on October 16th 2009; Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Ladd (UAS pilot)who has since taken command of 514 th Special Operations Aviation Regiment based at McConnell AB.; Captain James Burchfield (UAS pilot) aboard UAS unit Gulfstream IV from December 15th 2008 through April 12th2009; Sergeant First Class Shawna Wojciechowski serving with 4 th Infantry Division Brigade Combat Team Joint Task Force -Alaska Mountain region concurrently with her regular infantry duty; Sergeant Second Class Chad Thomas flying MH370 mission support aircraft along side his fellow pilots from 56 th Fighter Squadron based out Sherpa Valley AB.; Master Sgt David Bowers flying Chinook helicopters detachment with Australia Defense Forces campaign against forest fires near Darwin Airport northwest Australia; Captain Carlos Martinez commanding Helicopter Unit 6nefteld AB., attached EOD battalion 9Newsome Field Hospital providing medical evacuation capabilities during Operation Neptune Spear Bahrain Relief Mission There have also been numerous donations made toWinterhaven directly or indirectly through entities such as Operation Santa Claus collecting items like toys for children or canned goods for families affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita or money donated towards special projects such as new infrastructure development such as bridge replacements or deactivation costs associated with bringing Old Hickory Aircraft Factory back online after being shuttered for more than 40 years One particularly significant event occurred on November 25th 2006 when UAS squadron Vought-Higgins accompanied local fighter jets participating in Northern Light Bomber Wing exercisesimulated combat against simulated enemy fighters flown by Lt Col Jeffrey Smith (UAS pilot). The United States Air Force Deployment Gift Program (AFDP) is a program that provides air force personnel and their families with unique and thoughtful gift items. The AFDP was created in 1978 to provide USAF personnel and their families with the opportunity to express appreciation for service through special gifts. The AFDP consists of two main components: the Air Force Christmas Tree Gift Program and the Air Force Wreath-Laying Ceremony Gift Program. The Air Force Christmas Tree Gift Program allows air force members and their families to purchase or receive a tree from an enlisted member's family, as well as gift certificates for various services such as lawn care, dog walking, home repairs, etc. The Air Force Wreath-Laying Ceremony Gift Program allows spouses of air force members to lay wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery on Remembrance Day.
The Florida Air National Guard’s 144th Aerospace Expeditionary Wing (AEW) deployed a gift to the Winter Haven community in commemoration of the centennial of the United States Army Air Forces. On Dec. 5, 1940, the 1st Bombardment Group (Medium) of the First World War’s “Flying Tigers” flew from China into Japan to bomb Hiroshima. At 6:45 a.m., they took off from Yokota airfield and reached their altitude of 9,000 feet before descending within seconds to 2,000 feet and detonating their bombs over Hiroshima. The impact destroyed most of downtown Hiroshima and caused an estimated death toll in excess of 50,000 people; however, only 3% of all survivors returned home alive. In 1946-1947, as part of Operation Paperclip®, more than 100 Japanese nationals were brought over to America for employment in various sectors including engineering, construction and management positions with American companies such as GEICO and Lockheed Aircraft Corporation; however many Japanese citizens did not receive proper documentation or identification which resulted in them being classed asenemy aliens. As a result, on Jan. 25th 1948 was enacted Executive Order 9066 which placed restrictions on immigration from countries deemed hostile by the U.S.; this led to the deployment of gifts under 269th Airlift Wing duringOperation GRANDE PICTURE which transported children displaced by hostilities throughout Europe during 1948-1949 inclusive. During this time periodWinter Haven received its first gift when Lt Col Harry Ahern delivered fresh vegetables to local families through his Ameriquest Welfare Service station located at 7111 NE 12th Ave in Springdale Township during 1949-1950; this was followed by another delivery soon afterwards when Mrs Betty Ford donated 8 boxes OF CASH TO THE COMMUNITY FROM HER HOME IN SPRINGDALE TOWNSHIP FOR THE ADVERTISING OF HER NEW RADIO STATION WILDCASTLE FM also operated out ofwinterhaven during these years..
Winter Haven is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Winter Haven was first settled by Native American peoples in the late 17th century. In 1810, Winter Haven was organized as a village under the name of Muscogee Bayou. A post office was established in 1813 and remained in operation until 1925. The city was named for General James K. Polk and his wife Clara Barton because they were among the first Americans to visit Florida during President James K. Polk's administration (1845-1849). In 1860, two brothers, John Crain and George Henningsen purchased 1,530 acres (680 hectares) northeast of present-day Winter Haven from Major Elisha Mott for $10 per acre ($ ). They began building what would become known as "The Henningsen Estate" with its accompanying hamlet of Spring Lake on their property. After years of drought and hard labor, they had their dreamcome true: a thriving cotton plantation with up to 100 slaves working it! By 1863, "The Henningsen Estate" had been enlarged to 486 acres (240 hectares). This success story led to many other entrepreneurs starting plantations throughout southern Florida during Reconstruction; however, most were destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.) The City of Winter Haven incorporation took place on December 12 1906. The original boundaries included all of present-day Polk County except portions east of US 27 which were annexed into Hillsborough County when that county was created from parts of Pinellas and Pasco Counties on November 3 1907
