During World War II, Wilton Manors played an important role in helping support American troops stationed in Europe. In 1903, Rear Admiral David Farragut presented Secretary of State Theodore Roosevelt with an Italian model torpedo boat as a gift for his new navy fleet. The Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 granted submarines to the United States Navy and included an article authorizing the President to award ships and boats for charitable or military purposes. For World War II, Congress approved $5 million for Gift Aid programs that would provide money to patriotic Americans who sent goods sponsored by their organizations to members of the Armed Forces overseas. This generosity continued into postwar years when various donations were made such as radios, dishes and books from Hollywood studios and Sears Roebuck department stores during WWII+. After World War II ended there was increased demand for remembrances so in 1951 Congress passed RFC 7551 which created "The National Memorial Day Act" which established April 15th as National Memorial Day across America Today, nearly every branch of service hosts its own memorial day celebration including World War I veteran's Day (November 1) and Veterans Day (December 11th). Various special events are also held throughout America each year honoring those who have served our country including Flag Day (May 8th), Easter Sunday (April 12th), Armistice day (November 11th) and Mothers day ( May 6th). Wilton Manors is a small town in Broward County, Florida. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The name "Wilton" comes from the Indian word "winona", meaning place where wild rice grows. William Jennings Bryan, then U.S. Senator from Illinois, pronounced the word "wintony" and distributed leaflets announcing this discovery in 1892 to promote American agriculture in South Asia during his tour of that region as United States Ambassador to India. The town began as a stop on stagecoach routes between Fort Lauderdale and Miami in the early 1800s; it prospered because its farmers could grow rice without having to leave their homes for months at a time to pick it up piece by piece from the flooded fields near Lake Okeechobee. In 1905, Wilton Manor was established as a residential community with 587 lots owned by developers Wanda and Edward Gibbons Addison (later Gibbons-Addison). In 1910, development continued with the purchase of an additional 465 lots by developer Harry Hargrave and His Sons for $4 million dollars (then about $140 million today). This addition made Wilton Manors one of largest single developments ever undertaken in Broward County before or since World War II. The Town's first mayor was James Muhlenberg and its first sheriff was Orlando Kappler . Kappler served until 1949 when he became Mayor Pro Tem under Governor Manuel López Portillo . In 1957, after serving two terms as Mayor Pro Tem under Governor John Connally , Kappler unsuccessfully ran for re-election to become Broward County Sheriff which he did not succeed in achieving due to term limits set at that time by then-Governor Robert Shriver He also served as President of theBroward Republican Party from 1966 through 1976
Wilton Manors was a village in central Florida, United States. The site of the village is now part of the city of Wilton Springs. The first permanent settler in what would become Wilton Manor was Capt. George Wilkinson, who arrived in 1824. He and his family were among the earliest white settlers in what is now Polk County. Captain Wilkinson's daughter, Mary Wilkinson, married John Sanford on November 12, 1830. The Spencers became one of the most prominent families in Polk County and their home at 6362-6376 Estero Rd., remains a popular tourist destination today. In 1838, Capt. George Wilkinson's son James Wilkinson sold land to Nathaniel Helmuth for $2 per acre (equivalent to $100 dollars at that time). Nathaniel Helmuth had come from Germany with his parents and siblings as refugees during the American Civil War and had joined up with Confederate forces as a private soldier before he was captured by Union forces near Tampa Bay on July 10, 1864. After being exchanged into Union custody he returned to Tampa and began farming here until he discovered this area of central Florida about which he knew nothing - it was then named "Nathaniel Helmuth Wilderness". On October 3rd, 1838 James Wilkinson donated 320 acres (12 hectares) southeast of where modern day City Hall stands to make way for what would become known as "Wilton Manor." This donation included swampy land that still forms part of present day Wilton Springs Village Limits; today's two blocks north/south between Umberto Road/State Road 2A & State Road 5A are also known as "Wilton Manor". Captain James Wilkinson's wife Mary gave birth to their only child, Charles Wesley Sanford Wilkinson on December 21st 1840 just outside modern day City Hall Square; they named him after their father who died less than two months later due to pneumonia while serving with General William Tecumseh Sherman’s army during the Battle of Gaines Creek on April 9th 1865 aged 38 years old – Charles Wesley Sanford would become one of America’s leading politicians and inaugural directors on the Board Of Trustees for Hillsborough Community College (now HCC). Commodore Matthew Perry landed at Stonington Harbor May 7-81845 aboard USS Perry when his squadron sailed from Pensacola Landing Station towards Mobile Bay; upon landing there Commodore Perry met General Andrew Jackson who presented him with an American flag and several items including two cannons which were subsequently brought back to Washington D C as part of exhibits given at President Jackson’s inauguration February 4th 1848 In 1880 Captain Edwin A Shields bought 1/4 mile east side lot #191 from Mrs A J Holmes for $15 cash . This lot comprised parts or all of current day North Park Drive & South Street between US 1A & US 17E Shields built three houses here: White House #1 – this house is currently located in frontof City Hall Square downtown; it burned down in 1924 ; New House #2 –This house was moved here from its original location next door to Shields' Old House around 1978 ); finally Bluebird Nest #3 –This house has been relocated several times over the years but is currently located just northwest corner Umberto Rd./SR 2A opposite westbound SR 5A ) In 1886 Captain Edwin A Shields bought 1/4 mile east side lot #191 from Mrs A J Holmes for $15 cash .
