By 1907, more than 400 people were employed at various factories processing coffee in Wilton Manors alone. By 1916, most of these businesses had closed down due to World War I bombings which destroyed many businesses around that time. However, one remaining business continued to operate until it burned down in 1966: The Brown Bros./Cafeteria chain operated a café inside Pembroke Park Mall from 1915-1966 featuring fresh roasted coffees from local farms supplemented by prepared meals (pancakes, bacon & eggs etc.). Wilton Manors is a small town located in Duval County, Florida. It was once one of the most important cotton plantations in the United States and is now a sleepy community known mainly for its golf courses. The town was first established in 1855 as a plantation called "Wilton Plantation." The name was changed to "Wilton" in 1868 after Wilton Manors Plantation became part of the Union Cotton Fields Factory complex. Today, Wilton has a population of about 2,000 people and is home to several public schools, including one that is considered one of the best in Florida. The cotton industry played an important role in early Wilton life. In 1855, John Wilkinson purchased 1,500 acres (600 ha) just east of the town from Anthony Whitehead for $2,000. Wilkinson had begun leasing land to whites for slave labor back in 1845 when he acquired this property from his father-in-law, Robert Wilkinson. By 1860, Wilkinson had built two textile mills on his land - One at Estero and another at West Palm Beach - which employed over 100 slaves during their peak production years between 1860 and 1865. Wilkinson's mills were among the largest cotton plantations south of Baltimore before they were shut down by federal government order following the American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended with slavery abolished nationwide, many white men traveled north looking for new opportunities while many African Americans relocated to other parts of Florida or South Carolina due to harsh treatment under Reconstruction laws. Many African Americans who had been born and raised within slavery were unable or unwilling to leave their homes free from bondage and so returned home after it became legal throughout much of America to be enslaved again (Dunnigan 1995). Consequently, by 1870 only 3% of all black residents lived within five miles (8 km)of any white person – within what would become known as "the Negro belt". However, because blacks constituted about 20% of Duval County's total population then (Goudreau 1987), Wilkinson's plantation still continued to play an important role not just within Duval County but also across southern Floridas during this time period
