The Wilton Manors Air Force Base has been a part of the Florida National Guard since 1947. The base, located in Wilton Manors, is home to the 1st Bombardment Wing and the 432d Troop Carrier Wing. It also houses two fighter squadrons and a unit assigned to provide airlift for NATO exercises. In 1969, the United States Air Force decided to move its main headquarters from Fort Worth, Texas to Wilton Manors. This was due in part to concerns about an impending recession and budget cuts at other military bases. The 1st Bombardment Wing became activated at Wilton Manors and began flying Winston-Salem bombers. In 1974, the 432d Troop Carrier Wing was activated and began providing airlift for NATO exercises in Europe. Wilton Manors AFB is one of only four USAF bases in Florida that are still operational as military airports with scheduled passenger service being provided by US Airways Holdings Incorporated (USA). Other USAF bases that continue operations include Gainesville AFB, Tampa Airport, Jacksonville Municipal Airport, and Homestead Airport. The base has seen a number of expansions over the years including construction of new barracks buildings as well as a new hangar complex which opened in 2003. Additionally, there have been several updates to the infrastructure such as additional water tanks and earthquake retrofitting work which took place in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

Wilton Manors is a town in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Wilton" is derived from a manor house that stood on the present-day site of Wilton Park until it was destroyed by fire in 1892. The new town was organized in 1893 and named for Wilton Place, Buckinghamshire, England. The first settlers were landowners who arrived around 1836. By 1860 there were more than 100 people living inWilton Park; most were slaves brought over from North Carolina or Georgia to work on plantations downstate. In 1870 white men began to purchase land aroundWilton for development as citrus townships; some of these tracts becameWilton Manors after incorporation on March 14, 1893." The original courthouse was built in 1907 and burned down in 1942 while being used as an ammunition depot during World War II; the courthouse replacement was completed in 1951 and dedicated by Governor John Sifakis." A post office called Wilton operated from 1836 to 1865; it was moved to its present location northwest of town on White Sands Road near Orange Blossom Trail when that road was extended westward. A store opened here in 1845 which closed about 1930 due to lack of customers." In 1896 Captain Jno Henningson purchased 1/2 mile (1 kilometer) northeast of town along US-27 for $5 per acre (0.24 hectares). This tract became known as Happy Hollow because it produced high quality oranges for shipment to New York City market." On October 15, 1909 the first water system went into service with 3 million gallons (10 million liters) drawn from two wells located east of town – this made Wilton Manors one of the first places within reach of people living outside Jacksonville." During World War II an army training school served troops stationed at nearby Fort Brooke which required barracks and a large lot next to what is now Kress Drive.; construction started on this complex which included a hospital, mess hall and numerous other features before completion in 1945 ." After the war many families left their jobs back home so they could start anew inWilTONManors which continued grow throughout the late 20th century thanks largely to Interstate Highway 95: "I-95 made possible today's shopping malls, apartments developments and other major metropolitan areas just north of downtown Tampa Bay," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn during an appearance at a dedication ceremony honoring I-95 earlier this year ."

Wilton Manors was founded in 1907 by Colonel Wilton Manors and his wife, the former Clara Barton. The manor-house is located on the now-defunct Dona Ana River Indian reservation. After World War I, Colonel Manors leased the land to citrus growers who established a small orchard there. In 1926, the Oranges Company moved its production from Florida to California after acquiring an orange plantation in Georgia. During World War II, many soldiers living in Wilton were drafted and served in the war effort; some of these men remain memorialized at nearby Fort Walton Beach Memorial Park.
