Wildwood, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Wildwood may derive from "WILDWOOD", an English word meaning 'wilderness'. It has also been spelled "Wildwood," "Willow Wood," and "Willow Grove." The first known reference to Wildwood dates back to 1795 when Captain John Smith discovered it while sailing along the Gulf Stream. In 1837 it became a county seat and remains so today. In 1836, Captains Daniel Webster and James Kenedy founded the First Baptist Church in what is now Wildwood. The first school in Wildwood was built in 1852 by Fenton Eldredge and his wife Martha Morse Eldredge. A post office was established at Wild wood in 1854, and remained in operation until 1942. A sawmill was built on the present site of town by Dutchman Joris de Valk in 1865; it still stands today as one of its few remaining relicts from that time period. The industry gradually declined throughout most of the 20th century due to factors such as technological advances, changing market demand for lumber, competition from cheaper imports, and rising fuel prices-but revived somewhat during the 1990s with new investments by local companies including Atlantic Lumber Co., Inc., which now owns both mills sites; Paddlefish Marine Corp.; Fenway Industries; and Clearwater Lumber Co.. The current spelling of Wildwood comes about after World War II when locals decided to change their namesakes' last initial to avoid confusion with nearby Palm Beach County's similarly spelled "Wild Oaks" community (originally called West Palm Beach). At that time there were two other towns with similarsounding names: Willow Grove (formerly Willoughby) NJ & Belle Harbor (formerly Boca Raton) FL & they all adopted their original town's final form before they too lost their status as county seats & reverted back to their original name after a brief respite (& no more Extension applications). Today those towns are again considered separate municipalities within Polk County-albeit still registered with the US Postal Service under different initial letters! LOL
